Overview
As the Manager of Underwriting Operations, you will play a pivotal role in steering the underwriting team towards achieving operational excellence. Your leadership will be essential in fostering a collaborative environment that promotes efficiency, productivity, and profitability, aligning with the corporate vision and objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior management with special projects that require advanced expertise and strategic insight.
  • Oversee the underwriting team's productivity, ensuring streamlined workflows and effective processes.
  • Collaborate with leadership to formulate and prioritize strategic initiatives.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of underwriting information systems and recommend enhancements to optimize workflows.
  • Act as the primary contact for escalated issues from agents and brokers, ensuring timely resolutions.
  • Ensure adherence to departmental guidelines, policies, and risk management objectives.
  • Engage in relationship management activities to strengthen partnerships.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop team members, tailoring their growth to their individual capabilities and career aspirations.
  • Lead special projects and initiatives as required.
  • Facilitate the development and delivery of both technical and non-technical training for internal staff and external partners.
  • Coordinate training sessions, both in group settings and one-on-one, while creating relevant training materials.
  • Manage service delivery to meet corporate service standards consistently.
  • Support the implementation of new technological initiatives.
  • Oversee performance management processes, including onboarding, promotions, and disciplinary actions.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies within the department.
  • Possess specialized knowledge of products and pricing to provide guidance to colleagues and distributors.
  • Understand policy coverages thoroughly, identifying potential gaps and exposures.
  • Recognize the impact of political, legal, and social factors on underwriting practices and ensure compliance with established standards.
  • Be aware of acceptance criteria for related business lines.
  • Refer to other product line underwriters as necessary.
  • Explain factors influencing loss ratios, severity, and frequency.
  • Analyze relevant data using appropriate software to assess risk levels.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in complex underwriting.
  • Post-secondary education with a CIP designation.
  • Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to make informed decisions.
  • Strong communication skills, adaptable to various audiences.
  • Ability to influence decisions and negotiate effectively.
  • A proactive learner who excels in both team-oriented and independent settings.
  • Proficient in both written and verbal communication.
  • Demonstrated decision-making and analytical skills, particularly in assessing business profitability through risk evaluation.
