Overview
As the Underwriting Team Manager, you will assume a pivotal leadership role, offering support, direction, and mentorship to your team while driving the execution of business unit objectives. Your leadership will ensure that the underwriting department operates with optimal efficiency, productivity, and profitability, aligning with corporate goals and service standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the VP and senior leadership in special projects, leveraging advanced technical expertise as required.
  • Oversee the productivity of the underwriting team, ensuring streamlined and effective workflows.
  • Collaborate with leadership on the formulation and prioritization of strategic initiatives.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of all underwriting information systems and programs, recommending enhancements to processes and procedures.
  • Manage escalations from agents and brokers, serving as the primary contact when necessary.
  • Ensure adherence to departmental guidelines, policies, and risk objectives.
  • Engage in relationship management activities.
  • Recruit, coach, mentor, and train team members to foster their professional development.
  • Lead special projects and initiatives as required.
  • Facilitate the development and delivery of both technical and non-technical underwriting training for internal staff and external partners.
  • Coordinate training efforts in both group and individual settings, creating training materials as needed.
  • Ensure that corporate service standards are consistently met.
  • Support the implementation of new technology initiatives.
  • Oversee performance management, including new hires, promotions, and disciplinary actions.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies within the department.
  • Possess specialized knowledge of products and pricing to provide guidance to colleagues and distributors.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of policy coverages, identifying gaps in coverage or exposure to loss.
  • Be aware of the political, legal, and social factors influencing underwriting practices.
  • Understand acceptance rules for related lines of business and refer to other product line underwriters as necessary.
  • Analyze factors affecting loss ratios, severity, and frequency.
  • Utilize appropriate software to analyze relevant data and assess risk levels.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of complex underwriting experience.
  • Post-secondary education with a CIP designation.
  • Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to make informed decisions.
  • Strong communication skills, adaptable to various audiences.
  • Proven ability to influence decisions and negotiate effectively.
  • Passionate about learning, thriving in both team and independent environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated decision-making and analytical capabilities, with a focus on enhancing business profitability through risk assessment.
