The Community Shelter Assistance Coordinator will collaborate with a dedicated team to deliver impactful services to shelter residents and tenants, grounded in a feminist framework that acknowledges the complexities of trauma and oppression. This role serves as a vital resource for both staff and participants, responsible for a comprehensive array of services including crisis intervention, case management, and the design, execution, and assessment of workshops. Additionally, this position contributes to maintaining the overall safety and well-being of the facility.

ABOUT YWCA TORONTO - 1st STOP WOODLAWN

This program accommodates up to 62 shelter beds for youth (16-24 years) and adult (25 and older) women, trans, and non-binary participants. It operates within a congregate living environment that includes 72 units of permanent housing. Community Shelter Assistance Coordinators will adhere to a fixed schedule that may encompass weekdays and/or weekends, focusing on case planning for all shelter residents. This shelter is funded by the City of Toronto and complies with established shelter standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Utilizes knowledge of trauma and the dynamics of gender-based violence and homelessness to create and implement effective support strategies.
  • Engages with participants individually and/or in groups to enhance social and living skills, assisting them in setting goals, executing plans, recognizing options, and making positive choices.
  • Provides assessment and case management support services to residents, emphasizing harm reduction, immigration, legal, health and wellness, education, and training.
  • Collaborates with residents to establish a plan that promotes a safe and effective transition to independence.
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates workshops and groups addressing participants' mental health challenges and trauma experiences through interactive techniques.
  • Participates in reflective practice with the staff team to ensure the delivery of high-quality programs and services.
  • Ensures adherence to Health and Safety Guidelines in line with YWCA Toronto's policies and procedures, taking corrective action as necessary.
  • Performs additional duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Comprehensive knowledge of an academic discipline typically acquired through completion of a clinically supervised undergraduate degree (e.g., BSW). An analytical framework that recognizes clients' relationships to social systems and demonstrated practical application of this framework is essential.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a diverse, direct service environment supporting participants from youth to seniors who have faced challenges related to poverty, homelessness, trauma, mental health, or other forms of marginalization.
  • Completion of Toronto Hostel's Training Certificate (T.H.T.C.) or equivalent is preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of anti-oppression, trauma-informed, harm reduction, and feminist frameworks.
  • Knowledge of community resources and support systems is essential.
  • In-depth understanding of the dynamics of gender-based violence and trauma within an anti-oppression context.
  • Familiarity with the intersections of systemic oppression.
  • Experience providing culturally sensitive services in a multicultural setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, email, and internet usage.
  • Completion of Hostel Services Shelter Standards is an asset.
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation regarding housing and human rights is advantageous.
  • A certificate in trauma counselling is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of a second language is a plus.
