Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Director to join our team at The Salvation Army. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of our shelter programs, building relationships with residents, and contributing to the Intake team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervision and Leadership
    • Supervise and provide direction to Hostel/Residential Supervisors in accordance with established policies.
    • Conduct supervision sessions, document results, and provide feedback.
    • Chair and minute regular team meetings.
  • Client Support
    • Provide direct consultation, referral, and supportive case management to clients.
    • Review incident reports, make follow-up, and update client files as needed.
    • Liaise with hospitals and community service agencies to coordinate discharges.
  • Community Engagement
    • Participate in the development, planning, and coordination of programming activities and special events.
    • Assist with community and city complaints.
    • Provide backup support and make decisions in the absence of the Director.
  • Human Resources
    • Assist with staff recruitment, selection, and onboarding.
    • Recommend disciplinary actions, including termination, in concert with the Director.
    • Organize and assist with staff training.
    • Manage time off, lieu time, and schedule requests.
  • Administrative and Technical Responsibilities
    • Compile monthly shelter statistics for submission to the Director.
    • Assist with ensuring the shelter meets quality assurance and accreditation standards.
    • Attend committee, conferences, and agency meetings as directed.
    • Schedule and chair meetings, prepare agendas, and circulate minutes.
  • Financial and Materials Management
    • Approve daily payroll for Hostel/Residential Supervisors, Intake Workers, and Dining Room Attendants.
    • Assist with preparing yearly budgets and funding applications.
    • Monitor financial expenditures against annual budget projections.
    Working Conditions

This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week. The work environment is an emergency housing facility with high client levels of stress and crisis intervention required.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Minimum 2-year Diploma in Human Services or equivalent.
  • Certificate in First Aid/CPR, Crisis Intervention, and CPI.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Knowledge
  • Minimum five years of significant work-related experience, including supervision, coaching, and mentoring of employees.
  • Experience working with extremely marginalized homeless people with mental health problems, addictions, and concurrent disorders.
Skills and Capabilities
  • High level of comfort working in a diverse and multicultural environment.
  • Superior written skills and proficiency with the Internet and Microsoft Office 365.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and undergo applicable screening and background checks.
  • Ability to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
