Senior Vice President, Private Equity Operations

Position Overview
Reporting directly to the Head of BMO Global Asset Management Private Equity, the Senior Vice President, Private Equity is an integral part of the private equity division, tasked with a diverse array of duties encompassing sourcing, thorough analysis, transaction execution, portfolio oversight, and management reporting for both current and prospective private equity funds/programs managed for institutional and private wealth clients. This role involves collaboration with the Head of Private Equity to enhance BMO's international footprint in the private equity arena. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned professional who is curious, diligent, and possesses the expertise and ambition to expand the private equity sector within a prestigious, global Canadian financial institution.
Investment Management Responsibilities
- Engaging in all phases of a transaction, from initial deal-flow identification to due diligence, preparation of investment documentation, legal review, and management of capital distributions and calls.
- Analyzing and evaluating financial and operational data related to private equity fund investments and co-investments.
- Conducting in-depth research and due diligence on emerging investment opportunities.
- Preparing and/or assessing financial models.
- Evaluating the strengths and potential risks associated with each investment proposal.
- Compiling the investment rationale in a memorandum for presentation to the Investment Committee.
- Reviewing and negotiating legal contracts, including Limited Partnership Agreements and Subscription Agreements.
- Performing benchmark analysis utilizing external private equity data sources such as Preqin, PitchBook, Burgiss, and Cambridge Associates.
- Compiling quarterly performance reports for a portfolio of fund investments and co-investments.
- Ensuring the accuracy of portfolio data.
- Analyzing quarterly NAV statements and executing Mark-to-Market adjustments for existing portfolio investments, as necessary.
- Monitoring cash flows (capital calls and distributions) for managed funds and their underlying investments.
- Completing reporting obligations, developing reports, and providing ad-hoc analysis.
Relationship Management Duties
- Building effective business relationships within the Canadian, U.S., U.K., and Western European private equity sectors.
- Collaborating with BMO partners active in the private equity industry.
- Regularly liaising with various BMO Global Asset Management teams that support the business (e.g., product, distribution, legal, tax).
- Maintaining robust relationships with investors.
Business Development Initiatives
- Advocating for BMO GAM's private equity capabilities and the business's global offerings to North American institutional and accredited high-net-worth investors.
- Drafting offering memoranda and investor presentations.
- Collaborating with BMO GAM's Distribution team and BMO Private Wealth Management to identify and engage prospective investors.
- Working with the BMO GAM Product team on the launch of new offerings.
Risk Management & Compliance Oversight
- Managing the portfolio within the established risk framework.
- Monitoring activities to ensure compliance with risk appetite, framework, and policies.
- Ensuring that new investment proposals adhere to Anti-Money Laundering protocols.
- Collaborating with BMO Legal and BMO Tax teams to effectively manage risks to investors and BMO.
Scope & Impact
As a pivotal member of the Private Equity team, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing innovative solutions to provide target markets with access to the private equity asset class and enhancing the private equity portfolios. The candidate will be engaged in all stages of the transaction process, from initial deal flow identification to due diligence, preparation of investment documentation, legal review, and management of capital distributions and calls.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
This role will involve client-facing activities and offers opportunities for business development. Regular communication and interaction with internal partners will be essential. The candidate must prioritize risk management and compliance procedures.
Knowledge & Skills Required
- An undergraduate degree, preferably in business.
- CA or CFA qualification is advantageous.
- An MBA is beneficial.
- At least 8 years of experience in private equity investing (funds and co-investments).
Skills and Abilities
- Strong financial acumen and investment expertise.
- Proven ability to collaborate with experienced private equity professionals.
- Understanding of the value creation process in private equity.
- Advanced analytical skills to evaluate the merits and risks of private equity investments.
- Capacity to meticulously review, assess, and provide detailed information on multiple projects in an organized manner.
- Proficiency in negotiating and communicating fund and deal structures.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills suited for a collaborative and demanding team environment.
- Ability to work independently as part of a small team through self-motivation.
Role Details
- There is potential for the role to expand as the team grows.
- The successful candidate will work in a hybrid work environment.
- The candidate will be part of a smaller team within GAM.
- Travel may be necessary.

Please note that this role includes a variable compensation component.
Compensation and Benefits:
$74,138,600.00

Compensation will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure.
