Reporting directly to the Head of BMO Global Asset Management Private Equity, the Senior Vice President, Private Equity plays a pivotal role within the private equity division, encompassing a diverse array of responsibilities such as sourcing investment opportunities, conducting thorough due diligence, executing deals, managing portfolios, and preparing management reports for current and prospective private equity funds and programs overseen for institutional and private wealth clients. This position requires a seasoned professional who is curious, diligent, and possesses the skills and ambition to enhance BMO's global footprint in the private equity landscape.
Investment Management Responsibilities
- Engaging in all phases of transactions, from initial deal sourcing to due diligence, investment paper preparation, legal document review, and management of capital calls and distributions, along with quarterly reporting.
- Analyzing financial and operational data related to private equity fund investments and co-investments.
- Conducting in-depth research and due diligence on emerging investment prospects.
- Developing and/or evaluating financial models.
- Assessing the strengths and vulnerabilities of each potential investment.
- Compiling the investment rationale in a memorandum for presentation to the Investment Committee.
- Reviewing and negotiating legal agreements, including Limited Partnership Agreements and Subscription Agreements.
- Performing benchmark analysis utilizing external private equity data sources such as Preqin, PitchBook, Burgiss, and Cambridge Associates.
- Generating quarterly performance reports for a portfolio of fund investments and co-investments.
- Ensuring the accuracy of portfolio data.
- Analyzing quarterly NAV statements and executing Mark-to-Market adjustments for existing portfolio investments as necessary.
- Monitoring cash flows (capital calls and distributions) for managed funds and their underlying investments.
- Completing reporting obligations, creating reports, and providing ad-hoc analysis.
Relationship Management Duties
- Building effective business relationships within the Canadian, U.S., U.K., and Western European private equity sectors.
- Collaborating with BMO partners who are also engaged in the private equity industry.
- Regularly liaising with various BMO Global Asset Management teams that support the business (e.g., product, distribution, legal, tax).
- Maintaining robust relationships with investors.
Business Development Initiatives
- Advocating for BMO GAM's private equity capabilities and global products to North American institutional and accredited high-net-worth investors.
- Drafting offering memoranda and investor presentations.
- Collaborating with BMO GAM's Distribution team and BMO Private Wealth Management to identify and engage prospective investors.
- Partnering with the BMO GAM Product team to launch new offerings.
Risk Management & Compliance Oversight
- Managing the portfolio within the established risk framework.
- Monitoring activities to ensure compliance with risk appetite, framework, and policies.
- Ensuring that new investment proposals adhere to Anti-Money Laundering protocols.
- Collaborating with BMO Legal and BMO Tax teams to effectively manage risks associated with investors and BMO.
Scope & Impact
As a vital member of the Private Equity team, the successful candidate will be responsible for devising innovative solutions to provide target markets with access to the private equity asset class and expanding the private equity portfolios. The role encompasses involvement in all stages of the transaction process, including initial deal flow identification, due diligence, investment paper preparation, legal document review, capital call management, and regular quarterly reporting.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
This position will involve client-facing activities and offers opportunities for business development. Regular communication and collaboration with internal partners will be essential. The candidate should prioritize risk management and compliance procedures.
Knowledge & Skills Required
- An undergraduate degree, preferably in business.
- CA or CFA qualification is advantageous.
- An MBA is a plus.
- A minimum of 8 years of experience in private equity investing (funds and co-investments).
Skills and Abilities
- Strong financial acumen and investment skills.
- Proven capability to collaborate with experienced private equity professionals.
- Understanding of the value creation process in private equity.
- Exceptional analytical skills to evaluate the merits and risks of private equity investments.
- Ability to meticulously review, assess, and provide detailed information on multiple projects in an organized manner.
- Proficiency in negotiating and communicating fund and deal structures.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills within a collaborative and demanding team environment.
- Capability to function independently as part of a small team through self-motivation.
