Orillia, Ontario, Canada OSMH Full time

Position Overview
In collaboration with the medical team, the hospitalist will deliver comprehensive care for assigned in-patients. They may serve as the most responsible physician (MRP) for these individuals or engage in concurrent management alongside specialists. The hospitalists will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure high-quality care and services at Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital (OSMH), adhering to established and evolving clinical standards. They will employ exceptional diagnostic and therapeutic abilities for the evaluation and treatment of a diverse array of medical conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

Primary Duties:
The foremost duty is to ensure the delivery of top-tier medical care, utilizing OSMH's resources judiciously while operating within their training, experience, and skill level.

The hospitalist will be tasked with:

  • Providing MRP coverage for designated in-patients (these patients are typically 'unattached'—not currently enrolled with a physician or group that offers inpatient care).
  • Offering concurrent care upon request from specialists based on case complexity.
  • Participating in 24/7 coverage alongside fellow hospitalists.
  • Engaging in a multidisciplinary approach to clinical utilization.
  • Facilitating effective communication with other care team members and hospitalists to ensure seamless patient care transitions.
  • Conducting regular reviews, meetings, and consultations with the care team, patients, and families.
  • Actively mentoring medical trainees to enhance their acute care skills.
  • Involving primary care and receiving agencies in case conferences for complex multi-morbid patients.
  • Communicating discharge plans to community physicians or nurse practitioners to optimize continuity of care.
  • Maximizing the use of the Electronic Medical Record, seeking additional training as necessary.
  • Utilizing available electronic order sets appropriately.
  • Participating in educational initiatives to support accurate coding practices.
  • Developing proficiency with voice transcription technology when available.

Exemptions:
The Acute Care Hospitalists may choose to participate in the rotation for providing normal newborn care, contingent upon current training and experience, although this is not a mandatory duty.

Availability:

  • Commit to a full seven-day or split-week schedule (model to be determined), ensuring 24/7 coverage for the designated inpatient population.
  • Devote workdays to hospital responsibilities, managing a patient census of approximately 20 (appropriate census and over-census procedures to be negotiated).
  • Coordinate with their group or team to cover community practice responsibilities if applicable.
  • Be available for admissions, timely rounding, and effective discharges, attending daily bullet rounds and huddles on assigned units.
  • Maintain accessibility for patients, families, and staff to collaboratively reassess care plans.
  • Participate in Structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounding (SIBR) where implemented, including patients and families as integral members of the care team.
  • Be on-call 24/7 for new admissions and in-patients in conjunction with other assigned hospitalists.

Utilization and Quality:
Utilize resources efficiently and strive to meet benchmarks in quality, access, turnaround times, etc., as determined by the department and Medical Advisory Committee.

General Expectations:
Exhibit behavior that aligns with the Mission, Vision, and Values of OSMH. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Lead, Acute Care Hospitalist or Chief of Family Medicine.

Qualifications:

  • Unrestricted license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) that enables the physician to fulfill the requirements of this role.
  • ACLS Training.

Experience:
Previous experience is preferred.

Competencies (RCPSC CanMEDS Competency Framework):

  • Function effectively as a consultant, integrating all CanMEDS roles to provide optimal, ethical, and patient-centered medical care.
  • Establish and maintain clinical knowledge, skills, and attitudes appropriate to practice.
  • Conduct thorough and appropriate patient assessments.
  • Implement preventive and therapeutic interventions effectively.
  • Demonstrate proficient use of procedural skills, both diagnostic and therapeutic.
  • Seek appropriate consultations from other health professionals, recognizing the limits of expertise.

Additional Information:
Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional and personal growth through Continuing Education Programs and Self-Directed Learning opportunities.

Employee Benefits:

  • A professional practice environment.
  • A collaborative atmosphere emphasizing teamwork.
  • Wellness initiatives.
  • Continuing education grants.
  • Employee recognition and assistance programs.
  • A competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Equal opportunities for growth and development.

Commitment to Diversity:
OSMH is dedicated to fostering diversity and equity in the workplace and welcomes applications from all qualified individuals, including women, visible minorities, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ2S individuals, and others who can contribute to a diverse workplace.

Workplace Accommodations:
Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital is a respectful, caring, and inclusive workplace. We are committed to championing accessibility, diversity, equal opportunity, and maintaining a barrier-free selection process for job applicants. Requests for accommodation can be made at any stage of the recruitment process, provided the applicant meets the requirements for the open position. All requests are handled confidentially.

Health & Safety Responsibilities:
OSMH is committed to providing a safe, healthy, and supportive working environment by treating team members and patients with compassion, accountability, respect, and engagement. All team members must adhere to OSMH's Occupational Health and Safety policies, procedures, and protocols, as well as the duties of workers as stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Team members must be capable of performing all bona fide and essential duties of the position, which may include cognitive and physical demands.
