Position Overview
In collaboration with the medical team, the hospitalist will deliver care for assigned in-patients. They may serve as the most responsible physician (MRP) for these patients or provide concurrent care alongside specialists. The hospitalists will engage with a multidisciplinary team to ensure high-quality care and services at Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital (OSMH), adhering to established and progressive clinical practice standards. They will employ exceptional diagnostic and therapeutic skills for the evaluation and management of diverse medical conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

Primary Duties:
The foremost duty is to deliver top-tier medical care, utilizing OSMH resources judiciously, while operating within their training, experience, and skill level.

The hospitalist will be accountable for:

  • Providing MRP coverage for designated in-patients, particularly those who are unattached or not currently enrolled with a physician or group that manages inpatient care.
  • Offering concurrent care upon specialist request based on case complexity.
  • Participating in 24/7 coverage alongside fellow hospitalists.
  • Engaging in a multidisciplinary approach to clinical utilization.
  • Effectively communicating with care team members and other hospitalists to facilitate seamless patient care transitions.
  • Ensuring regular reviews, meetings, and consultations with the team, patients, and families.
  • Actively mentoring medical trainees to enhance their inpatient acute care skills.
  • Involving primary care and receiving agencies in case conferences for complex multi-morbid patients.
  • Communicating discharge plans to community physicians or nurse practitioners to optimize continuity of care.
  • Maximizing the use of the Electronic Medical Record, seeking additional training as necessary.
  • Consistently utilizing available electronic order sets as appropriate.
  • Participating in educational initiatives to support accurate and comprehensive coding practices.
  • Developing proficiency with voice transcription technology when available.

Exemptions:
Acute Care Hospitalists may choose to participate in the rotation for providing normal newborn care, provided they possess the relevant training and experience, though this is not a mandatory duty.

Availability:

  • Work a full seven-day or split-week schedule, ensuring 24/7 coverage for the defined inpatient population.
  • Dedicate work hours to hospital responsibilities, managing a patient census of approximately 20 (appropriate census and over-census procedures to be negotiated).
  • Coordinate with their group or team to cover community practice responsibilities if applicable.
  • Be accessible for admissions, timely rounding, and effective discharges, attending daily bullet rounds and huddles on assigned units.
  • Maintain availability and accessibility to patients, families, and staff to collaboratively develop and reassess care plans.
  • Participate in Structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounding (SIBR) where implemented, including patients and families as integral members of the care team.
  • Be on-call 24/7 for new admissions and in-patients in conjunction with other assigned hospitalists.

Utilization and Quality:
Utilize resources efficiently and strive to meet benchmarks in quality, access, and turnaround times as determined by the department and hospital.

General Expectations:
Conduct oneself in a manner that aligns with the Mission, Vision, and Values of OSMH. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Lead, Acute Care Hospitalist or Chief of Family Medicine.

Qualifications:

  • Unrestricted license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) that enables the physician to fulfill the requirements of this role.
  • ACLS Training.

Experience:
  • Previous experience in a similar role is preferred.
