Role Overview

We are in search of a proactive and passionate Technical Team Leader who excels in a dynamic startup atmosphere. In this pivotal role, you will spearhead the development of cutting-edge technology aimed at bolstering the integrity of online education. Your primary responsibilities will include mentoring your engineering team, refining the product development lifecycle, and collaborating with product management and other key stakeholders to deliver exceptional products. You may also engage in hands-on coding when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Inspire, coach, and guide your team to design and develop robust, user-friendly systems capable of accommodating millions of users. Foster a culture of open communication, building trust through clear expectations and constructive feedback.
  • Technical Guidance: Collaborate with your engineering team and the Founding CTO to shape the technical strategy, tackle complex technical challenges, contribute to architectural design, and influence technology selection. While hands-on coding is not a primary focus, you should be willing and able to contribute as needed.
  • Product Development Oversight: Partner with your team and product management to enhance and appropriately scale the product development process, ensuring high-quality, iterative product delivery, predictability, and measurable outcomes as we grow. You will be responsible for prioritizing, delegating, and overseeing engineering resources, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Continuous Improvement: Cultivate a culture of ongoing improvement, learning, and accountability within the engineering team. Despite being a small team, we are committed to delivering impressive results.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: As a member of the leadership team, work closely with leaders and teams across the organization to understand their objectives, challenges, and requirements. This role presents an exciting opportunity to develop as a leader and contribute to the overall success of the business.
  • Effective Communication: As a leader, you will need to be an outstanding communicator with other leaders and team members. It is essential to translate business objectives and the product roadmap for your team, ensuring they understand their role in the larger success of the organization. Encourage open dialogue to foster discussion and gather broader input.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in a startup environment, particularly with early-stage or growth-stage technology companies, is preferred. This experience should have equipped you to navigate and lead a team through uncertain situations, creating clarity and alignment.
  • A minimum of 5 years in software development, including at least 3 years in a leadership role managing a team of at least 3 developers. Your experience will be instrumental in shaping our engineering culture.
  • A strong desire and commitment to grow as a leader, with the support of our team. We envision this role evolving alongside the organization as we scale.
  • Experience in contributing to or defining product development processes. As we expand, having an engineering manager who understands best practices and can guide our processes is essential.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills are a must. We seek individuals who can effectively work within the leadership team and across various groups in the organization.
  • A learning mindset that you will extend to your team, demonstrating openness to new ideas and a willingness to explore innovative approaches to problem-solving.
  • Familiarity with event-driven microservices, well-structured APIs, and efficient algorithms is advantageous. While you do not need to be a top architect, this experience will be beneficial as you collaborate with our founding CTO and mentor your team.
