Qualifications and Requirements

Registration with Island Health as a practicing RN registrant is required.

  • General duty nursing positions require Basic Life Support, Level C, and up to one (1) year of recent related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Specialty unit nursing positions, such as Operating Room, Post Anesthetic Recovery, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, and Psychiatry, require specialty certification for the unit and up to two (2) years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Critical Care, Emergency, and Intensive Care nursing positions require Advanced Cardiac Life Support and specialty certification, and up to two (2) years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Key Skills and Abilities
  • The ability to apply the nursing process effectively in a well-organized manner to the care of assigned patients is essential.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position is required.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing, are necessary.
  • The ability to remain calm and act appropriately in stressful and emergency situations is crucial.
