About the Opportunity

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a highly skilled and experienced medical professional to fill the role of Department Head for the Hospitalist Zone. This is a unique opportunity to lead a team of medical staff and contribute to the development of strategic and operational plans for the zone.

The successful candidate will report to the Zone Medical Executive Director and work in a co-leadership model with an Administrative Co-Lead. Key responsibilities will include providing strategic and operational planning and service leadership, ensuring clinical care of patients within the zone department, and overseeing the administrative functioning of the department.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Governance
    • Hold responsibility for the administrative functioning of the department.
    • Work with Hospitalist Site Leads, Medical Site Leads, and operational leadership to ensure service continuity and key patient flow objectives are met.
  • Quality and Patient Care
    • Advise the Zone Medical Advisory Committee on the quality of care and treatment provided to patients in the zone department.
    • Participate in developing, reporting on, and overseeing the zone department's objectives, planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and utilization.
  • Clinical and Academic Activities
    • Hold responsibility for organization and implementation of clinical and academic activities of the department.
    • Ensure overall alignment and support of NSHA organization and system priorities.
  • Access and Flow
    • Develop and implement a plan focused on improving access and flow for the zone, including community hospitals and cross-facility transfers.
    • Attend meetings of the Access and Flow Network Council and contribute to the development of strategies, policies, and procedures that promote increased access and flow of patients.
  • Professional Standards and Quality Assurance
    • Ensure the continual maintenance and enforcement of professional standards within the department.
    • Implement quality assurance and improvement within the zone department.
  • Medical Staff Management
    • Address and resolve medical staff issues, including those involving respectful workplace and interpersonal matters.
    • Oversee complaint and discipline management for all department members.
  • Performance Management
    • Monitor the performance and effectiveness of medical staff members of the zone department.
    • Act on issues identified as required.
  • Education and Research
    • Coordinate medical students and residents in the Zone.
    • Support the research agenda within the department.
  • Leadership Development
    • Participate in leadership development opportunities.
Qualifications
  • MD, licensable in Nova Scotia.
  • 3-5 years' experience as a medical department member with experience engaging, mentoring, and empowering teams and stakeholders in a collaborative, participative manner.
