About the Opportunity

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a highly skilled and experienced medical professional to fill the role of Department Head for the Hospitalist Zone. Reporting to the Zone Medical Executive Director, this individual will provide strategic and operational planning and service leadership, in collaboration with relevant administrative Department leaders.

The successful candidate will have authority over and be responsible for the clinical care of patients within the zone department, including the scheduling of medical staff members and ensuring appropriate clinical coverage is provided. They will also be responsible for ensuring that all department members are compliant with NSHA Policies, the Medical Staff Bylaws, and the Medical Staff Rules and Regulations of the NSHA.

Responsibilities
  • Administrative Functioning: The Department Head will hold responsibility for the administrative functioning of the department, including holding regular department meetings and providing meeting minutes to the Zone Medical Executive Director.
  • Service Continuity: The Department Head will work with Hospitalist Site Leads, Medical Site Leads, and operational leadership to ensure service continuity is maintained through the department and that key patient flow objectives are met.
  • Zone Medical Advisory Committee: The Department Head will sit as an active member of the Zone Medical Advisory Committee, advising on the quality of care and treatment provided to patients, fulfilling teaching and research responsibilities, and participating in developing, reporting on, and overseeing the zone department's objectives, planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and utilization.
  • Clinical and Academic Activities: The Department Head will be responsible for organizing and implementing the clinical and academic activities of the department, ensuring overall alignment and support of NSHA organization and system priorities.
  • Access and Flow: The Department Head will work with the co-lead to develop and implement a plan focused on improving access and flow for the zone, including community hospitals and cross-facility transfers.
  • Quality Assurance and Improvement: The Department Head will ensure the continual maintenance and enforcement of professional standards within the department and implement quality assurance and improvement within the zone department.
  • Medical Staff Issues: The Department Head will address and resolve medical staff issues, including those involving respectful workplace and interpersonal matters, and oversee complaint and discipline management for all department members.
  • Performance Management: The Department Head will monitor the performance and effectiveness of medical staff members and act on issues identified as required.
  • Medical Education: The Department Head will coordinate medical students and residents in the Zone, including supervising residents' education requirements where applicable.
  • Research Agenda: The Department Head will support the research agenda within the department.
  • Clinical Services Planning: The Department Head will participate in clinical services planning for the Zone/NSHA.
  • Recruitment and Retention: The Department Head will work collaboratively with the ZMED and Medical Site Leads to lead recruitment and retention for the department for the Zone.
  • Leadership Development: The Department Head will participate in leadership development.
Qualifications
  • MD, licensable in Nova Scotia
  • 3-5 years' experience as a medical department member with experience engaging, mentoring, and empowering teams and stakeholders in a collaborative, participative manner
