We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Hospitalist Department Head to join our team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. As a key member of our leadership team, you will play a critical role in providing strategic and operational planning and service leadership for our Zone Medical Department.
The successful candidate will have authority over and be responsible for the clinical care of patients within the zone department, including the scheduling of medical staff members and ensuring appropriate clinical coverage is provided. You will also be responsible for ensuring that all department members are compliant with NSH Policies, the Medical Staff Bylaws, and the Medical Staff Rules and Regulations of the NSHA.
Responsibilities- Administrative Functioning: You will hold responsibility for the administrative functioning of the department, including holding regular department meetings and providing meeting minutes to the Zone Medical Executive Director.
- Service Continuity: You will work with Hospitalist Site Leads, Medical Site Leads, and operational leadership to ensure service continuity is maintained through the department and that key patient flow objectives are met.
- Zone Medical Advisory Committee: You will sit as an active member of the Zone Medical Advisory Committee, advising on the quality of care and treatment provided to patients, fulfilling teaching and research responsibilities, and participating in developing, reporting on, and overseeing department objectives, planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and utilization.
- Clinical and Academic Activities: You will hold responsibility for organizing and implementing clinical and academic activities of the department, ensuring overall alignment and support of NSHA organization and system priorities.
- Access and Flow: You will work with the co-lead to develop and implement a plan focused on improving access and flow for the zone, including community hospitals and cross-facility transfers.
- Professional Standards: You will ensure the continual maintenance and enforcement of professional standards within the department and implement quality assurance and improvement within the zone department.
- Medical Staff Issues: You will address and resolve medical staff issues, including those involving respectful workplace and interpersonal matters, and oversee complaint and discipline management for all department members.
- Performance Management: You will monitor the performance and effectiveness of medical staff members of the zone department and act on issues identified as required.
- Leadership Development: You will participate in leadership development and work collaboratively with the ZMED and Medical Site Leads to lead recruitment and retention for the department.
- Medical Degree: You must hold a medical degree and be licensable in Nova Scotia.
- Experience: You must have 3-5 years' experience as a medical department member with experience engaging, mentoring, and empowering teams and stakeholders in a collaborative, participative manner.
