About the Role

The Recreation Coordinator reports to the Therapeutic Recreation Manager or designate. This role plays a vital part in planning, implementing, and evaluating activity programs that cater to the diverse needs and interests of our residents, while maintaining their rights and dignity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the team to develop and maintain a comprehensive recreation program that promotes socialization, physical activity, and mental stimulation.
  • Assist in researching, developing, and implementing new programs and services that meet the evolving needs of our residents.
  • Coordinate and promote established recreation programs, including outings, exercises, crafts, social events, entertainment, and games.
  • Assist in creating and posting monthly calendars and newsletters that outline programs and services available to residents and families.
  • Coordinate external groups to provide in-house programs that enhance the quality of life for our residents.
  • Provide support and assistance to residents, including portering to and from programs as required.
  • Observe, document, and report any changes in residents to the supervisor and/or nurse.
  • Maintain a safe environment for residents, family, and staff by adhering to accident prevention protocols, emergency procedures, and infection control measures.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of resident information, confidentiality, and security.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, committees, and educational in-services.
  • Assist in maintaining statistical records using programs such as Activity Pro, Point Click Care, etc.
  • Support the orientation of new residents and encourage participation in community activities.
  • Provide guidance, assistance, and support to volunteers, while evaluating their performance.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Grade 12 Education
  • A two-year Recreation or equivalent Diploma; or at a minimum a Health Care Aide with a Recreation/Activity Certificate
  • Previous experience in a senior-focused environment is an asset
  • Dementia course is an asset
  • Valid First Aid Level 1 Certification
  • Serving It Right Certificate
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate is an asset
  • Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver's License
  • All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines
  • Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Basic computer skills including Word, Publisher, and Outlook
