About the Role

The Recreation Aide assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating activity programs to meet the holistic needs and interests of individuals served, while maintaining their rights and ensuring they are treated with respect and dignity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with colleagues to support and strengthen the organizational culture and purpose.
  • Assist in the development of recreation and leisure services, including program research, development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Promote and publicize established recreation programs, such as outings, exercises, crafts, social events, entertainment, and games.
  • Coordinate external groups to provide in-house programs and services.
  • Assist residents and provide support as required, including portering to and from programs.
  • Observe, document, and report any changes in residents to the supervisor and/or nurse.
  • Maintain a safe environment for residents, family, and staff through accident prevention, knowledge of emergency procedures, and the safe use of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate documentation as per policy and procedures, confidentiality, and security.
  • Participate in orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, committees, and educational in-services.
  • Assist in the maintenance of statistical records using programs such as Activity Pro and Point Click Care.
  • Assist with orientation of new residents and encourage participation in community programs.
  • Provide guidance, assistance, and support to volunteers, while assisting in the evaluation of volunteers.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Grade 12 Education
  • A two-year Recreation or equivalent Diploma; or at a minimum a Health Care Aide with a Recreation/Activity Certificate
  • Previous experience in a senior's focused environment an asset
  • Dementia course an asset
  • Valid First Aid Level 1 Certification
  • Serving It Right Certificate
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate an asset
  • Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver's License
  • Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Basic computer skills including Word, Publisher, and Outlook
