Role Summary

What is the opportunity?

As the Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives and Business Operations, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction, oversight, and execution of the strategic vision, initiatives, and operational management activities within Retail Banking and Payments Technology (RBPTI). Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President / Head, you will provide essential strategic and operational support to the executive leadership team and collaborate with leaders across various sectors including Technology & Operations (T&O), Personal & Commercial Banking (P&CB), and Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) to advance and fulfill strategic and operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic consultant to the Executive Vice President and other senior executives, aiding in the execution of strategic and operational mandates.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders across T&O and RBC to propel cross-enterprise strategic initiatives and activities.
  • Facilitate executive meetings regularly to establish strategic direction for the function while reviewing progress on operational activities and financial performance.
  • Lead the Strategy and Business Operations team (approximately 20 members) to guide efforts in Technology Strategy, Portfolio and Planning Management, Vendor Strategy and Execution, Operational Risk, and Communications.
  • Oversee the strategy and execution of RBPT vendors in alignment with the overarching T&O and RBPTI Strategy.

Qualifications for Success

Essential Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business or a related field; an MBA is advantageous.
  • Over 10 years of demonstrated experience in collaborating with and advising senior executives while leading and executing strategic projects/programs (consulting experience is a plus). A total of 15+ years of professional experience is required.
  • Proven experience in executive engagement, stakeholder management, and team leadership.
  • Strong comprehension of revenue-generating businesses and financial acumen.
  • Experience in managing and developing technology strategy, with a broad understanding of technology delivery. Familiarity with current technology trends and their potential impacts is essential.
  • Experience managing substantial portfolios, including budget management and tracking, with close collaboration with Finance on all aspects of expenditure management.
  • Proven track record in building and managing performance metrics for large teams, establishing and managing goals. Collaborate with the leadership team to enhance operational efficiency, productivity, and other objectives.
  • Experience in Vendor Management and negotiating large contracts to drive cost savings and effective delivery models.
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and technology strategy skills.
  • Ability to create tailored content and presentations for an executive audience.
