Position Title: Engineer/Scientist/Technical Officer – Used Fuel Packaging Plant

Employment Type: Fulltime – One (1) Position Available

Location: Toronto Head Office

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Manager of the Used Fuel Packaging Plant, the successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary technical team to provide expert advice, guidance, and consultation in the domain of used nuclear fuel management and radioactive waste handling.

The role will focus on the design, development, and cost estimation of the Used Fuel Packaging Plant (UFPP), a Class 1B Nuclear Facility. This facility is designed to repackage a significant volume of CANDU fuel bundles annually into specialized containment systems, known as the Engineered Barrier System, for placement in a Deep Geological Repository (DGR). The Engineered Barrier comprises a bimetallic copper-steel Used Fuel Container encased in a compacted bentonite clay shell. The responsibilities encompass the entire facility life-cycle: site preparation, construction, operations, decommissioning, and closure. The role will address various challenges associated with used fuel handling, including waste acceptance criteria, equipment design for radiological environments, logistics of manufacturing and packaging, operational safety, and emergency management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define requirements for processes and systems to transfer used CANDU fuel into Used Fuel Containers.
  • Develop and validate automated assembly processes for the handling of radioactive materials.
  • Support design organizations in creating specifications and equipment designs for used fuel packaging facilities.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders from various engineering disciplines to enhance the UFPP design, focusing on performance requirements and risk mitigation.
  • Contribute to regulatory applications by providing necessary data and reports, and represent the Engineering Team in regulatory discussions.
  • Lead project management efforts, including the development of contracting documents and contractor performance monitoring.
  • Manage project budgets, including financial activities such as forecasting and business planning.
  • Communicate effectively with management and external stakeholders regarding project progress and design status.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices in all work activities.
  • Stay updated on advancements in radioactive waste management technologies through research and professional development.
  • Present findings to technical groups and regulatory authorities.
  • Engage in public outreach activities as required.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A 4-year university degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 6 years of relevant technical experience.
  • Familiarity with Canadian nuclear technology and CANDU fuel characteristics.
  • Experience in contract management and project management related to used fuel handling.

Preferred Experience:

  • Hands-on experience with system and equipment design for radiological environments.
  • Experience in the construction, operation, or decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements for Class I/IB Nuclear facilities.

Other Skills:

  • Highly motivated with a commitment to excellence.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical documents and regulations.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Willingness to travel as required.

Must be eligible to work in Canada and meet security clearance requirements.

The NWMO operates under a hybrid work model, allowing for a combination of in-office and remote work.

We offer a competitive salary, health benefits, and a pension plan.

The NWMO is dedicated to fostering Reconciliation in all its endeavors, promoting rights, equity, and well-being. As an employment equity employer, we actively seek diverse candidates for our workforce and provide accommodations for applicants with disabilities.
