Role of Process Engineers

Process Engineers at Cheme are specialists in their field, responsible for executing engineering tasks that encompass the sizing and selection of equipment, performing engineering calculations, developing drawing and specification packages, preparing capital budgets, and implementing systems in accordance with good manufacturing practices (GMP), good documentation practices (GDP), regulatory guidelines, and safety and environmental controls.

These engineers play a crucial role in project execution, prioritizing client service while leveraging their leadership and project management capabilities to ensure projects are completed on schedule, within specifications, and on budget. They are instrumental in driving project deliverables to completion by effectively coordinating with client stakeholders, equipment vendors, and contractors, thereby fostering long-lasting partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary engineering liaison with clients for designated systems and equipment.
  • Ensure selected equipment, components, and instrumentation comply with client standards and integrate seamlessly with existing systems.
  • Identify and review process and equipment system boundaries.
  • Evaluate engineering calculations, equipment sizing, P&IDs, layout drawings, general arrangement drawings, and equipment data sheets.
  • Review engineering specifications, including user requirements, functional specifications, and detailed design specifications.
  • Assess BIM Models and approve shop drawings.
  • Review commissioning and qualification protocols.
  • Support risk assessments related to safety and quality.
  • Assist in Startup and Execution during the CQV phase.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Oversee and coordinate equipment installation and startup.
  • Conduct field troubleshooting at client sites.
  • Engage in work at client locations.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in mechanical, chemical, process engineering, process development, or technology transfer.
  • Bachelor's degree in Applied Science in engineering from a recognized university in Canada or North America.
  • Familiarity with Kneat electronic validation software is advantageous but not essential.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Personable demeanor.
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly.
  • Curiosity about various technologies and a self-driven desire to achieve proficiency.
  • Proficient in Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft Office Suite for document preparation.
  • Valid driver's license and car ownership.
  • Multilingual abilities are a plus but not mandatory.

Core Competencies

  • Mechanical, Chemical, and Process engineering expertise with 5 to 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in executing engineering tasks, including:
    • Process engineering calculations, equipment sizing, specifications, flow diagrams, and P&IDs.
    • Design engineering of mechanical piping, skids, components, and layouts.
  • Ability to comprehend, verify, and annotate engineering design documents (P&IDs, electrical drawings, functional specifications, design specifications, etc.).
  • Knowledge of cGMP, GDP, and regulatory requirements (FDA, Health Canada, EU) applicable to the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
  • Understanding of automated Process Control Systems (PCS), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), PLCs, and Historian systems in a manufacturing context.
  • Familiarity with validation using a risk-based approach as per ASTM E2500 Standards is beneficial but not required.
  • Capability to train and develop junior staff.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients.
  • Adept at interacting with clients and colleagues in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Proficient in Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft Office Suite for document preparation.
