Role of the Process Engineer

As a Process Engineer at Cheme Engineering, you will be recognized as a process authority responsible for executing engineering tasks. These tasks include the sizing and selection of equipment, performing engineering calculations, developing drawing and specification packages, preparing capital budgets, and implementing systems in accordance with good manufacturing practices (GMP), good documentation practices (GDP), regulatory guidelines, and safety and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary engineering liaison with clients for designated systems and equipment.
  • Evaluate and ensure compliance of selected equipment, components, and instrumentation with client standards and their integration with existing systems.
  • Identify and review process and equipment system boundaries.
  • Assess engineering calculations, equipment sizing, P&IDs, layout drawings, general arrangement drawings, and equipment data sheets.
  • Review engineering specifications, including user requirements specifications, functional specifications, and detailed design specifications.
  • Examine BIM Models and approve shop drawings.
  • Oversee commissioning and qualification protocols.
  • Assist in risk assessments related to safety and quality.
  • Support startup and execution during the commissioning, qualification, and validation (CQV) phase.
  • Prepare detailed reports.
  • Coordinate and oversee equipment installation and startup activities.
  • Conduct field troubleshooting at client sites.
  • Engage in work at client locations.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in mechanical, chemical, or process engineering, process development, or technology transfer.
  • A Bachelor of Applied Science degree in engineering from a recognized Canadian or North American university.
  • Familiarity with Kneat electronic validation software is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Exceptional organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Personable demeanor.
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly.
  • Curiosity about various technologies and software, with a self-driven approach to mastering them.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft operating systems and the Microsoft Office Suite for document preparation.
  • A valid driver's license and car ownership are required.
  • Multilingual capabilities are a plus but not mandatory.

Core Competencies

  • Proficient mechanical, chemical, and process engineering skills with at least 5 to 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in executing engineering tasks, including:
    • Process engineering calculations, equipment sizing, specifications, flow diagrams, and P&IDs.
    • Design engineering of mechanical piping, skids, components, and layouts.
  • Ability to comprehend, verify, and annotate engineering design documents (P&IDs, electrical drawings, functional specifications, design specifications, etc.).
  • Understanding of cGMP, GDP, and regulatory requirements (FDA, Health Canada, EU) relevant to the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
  • Familiarity with automated Process Control Systems (PCS), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), PLCs, and Historian systems in a manufacturing context.
  • Knowledge of validation processes using a risk-based approach per ASTM E2500 Standards is an asset but not mandatory.
  • Experience in training and developing junior staff.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients.
  • Adept at interacting with clients and colleagues in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft operating systems and the Microsoft Office Suite for document preparation.
