Position Overview:

Reporting to the Inspections Manager, this role is pivotal in ensuring that both new and existing structures adhere to the approved designs, the Ontario Building Code, and relevant municipal regulations. The successful candidate will engage in the inspection and assessment of plumbing and HVAC systems, guaranteeing compliance with established standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough inspections of construction and demolition activities to verify adherence to approved plans and applicable laws.
  • Review and approve the construction of plumbing and mechanical systems in compliance with the Ontario Building Code and municipal bylaws.
  • Inspect and validate the installation and testing of fire suppression and HVAC systems as part of life safety evaluations.
  • Organize inspection workloads and document findings, including the collection of photographic evidence and the preparation of detailed reports within the records management system.
  • Collaborate with property owners, contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders to provide guidance on construction activities and regulatory compliance.
  • Investigate complaints regarding building code violations and enforce compliance with relevant statutes and regulations.
  • Assess unsafe working conditions and participate in investigations as necessary.
  • Inspect buildings for fire damage and determine necessary repairs or replacements for HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Ensure compliance for occupancy clearances and prepare evidence for legal proceedings when required.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding the Ontario Building Code and related regulations.
  • Issue orders for non-compliance with the Ontario Building Code and verify that construction materials and methods meet approved standards.
  • Represent the division in various committees and meetings, providing mentorship and technical support to junior staff.
  • Travel to various sites as required and perform Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation's Health and Safety Program.

Qualifications:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, plus one year of post-secondary education in Plumbing or Sheet Metal Work, with a Certificate of Qualification.
  • Provincial Qualifications in General Legal/Process, H.V.A.C. House, and Building Services.
  • Experience in the design and installation of plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting construction plans and specifications.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and related standards.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to engage courteously with the public.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act as it pertains to building construction.
  • Additional qualifications in Complex Buildings and On-site Sewage are considered an asset.
  • Membership in relevant professional associations is advantageous.
