Building Compliance Inspector

Position Overview:
Reporting to the Inspections Manager, this role is integral to ensuring that all buildings and properties adhere to the Ontario Building Code and related regulations. The inspector will conduct thorough site evaluations to confirm compliance with approved plans and applicable standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform inspections on construction and demolition projects to verify adherence to the Ontario Building Code, relevant standards, and best practices.
- Evaluate ground and wall signage for compliance with municipal by-laws and issue necessary orders for any violations.
- Organize and document inspection findings, including the collection of photographic evidence and reports in a digital records management system.
- Provide guidance to contractors, architects, and the public regarding construction regulations and practices, while addressing any complaints.
- Review architectural plans and specifications to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code.
- Verify site conditions against permit drawings and municipal addresses to ensure alignment with planning decisions.
- Collaborate with other divisions and external agencies to ensure compliance with planning agreements.
- Investigate complaints and enforce regulations related to property standards, zoning, and other applicable statutes.
- Report unsafe working conditions to the Ministry of Labour and participate in related investigations.
- Assess the structural integrity of buildings that have suffered fire damage or are deemed unsafe, determining the need for repairs or demolition.
- Prepare evidence for legal proceedings and represent the municipality in civil litigation.
- Respond to public inquiries regarding the Ontario Building Code and construction requirements.
- Issue compliance orders for violations of the Ontario Building Code.
- Conduct inspections for partial occupancy and issue relevant permits.
- Perform annual inspections for licensing of public venues and establishments serving alcohol.
- Compile detailed technical reports and review consultant submissions for accuracy.
- Ensure that construction materials and methods meet established standards.
- Issue Orders to Comply for regulatory infractions and participate in legal actions as necessary.
- Approve alternative designs and equipment that deviate from approved plans.
- Represent the division in various committees and meetings.
- Mentor junior staff members.
Additional Information:
This position requires travel to various locations and adherence to Occupational Health & Safety protocols as outlined in the organization's safety program. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma plus three years of post-secondary education in Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or Mechanical Engineering Technology.
- Provincial qualifications in relevant areas from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs.
- Valid Class 'G' Driver's License and access to a properly insured vehicle.
- Experience in building design and installation of plumbing, heating, and ventilation systems.
- Proficiency in a computerized office environment and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and related standards.
- Effective communication skills in both oral and written forms.
- Knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act as it pertains to construction.
- Additional qualifications in 'Complex Buildings' and 'On-site Sewage' are advantageous.
- Strong interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities.
- Current Certificate of Qualification as a sheet metal worker is a plus.
- O.A.C.E.T.T. or A.A.T.O. certification as an Engineering or Architectural Technician is an asset.
- Membership with the Ontario Building Officials Association and CBCO designation is preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 11 lbs.
