We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Building Inspector to join our team at the City of Windsor. As a key member of our Building Services department, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the Ontario Building Code and other relevant regulations.
Key Responsibilities- Inspect and monitor construction and demolition sites to ensure compliance with approved plans, the Ontario Building Code, and relevant municipal bylaws.
- Review and inspect the construction of plumbing and mechanical building systems for all buildings regulated by the Ontario Building Code.
- Verify the installation and testing of fire suppression systems and life safety systems.
- Organize and document inspection results, including photographs, documents, and reports.
- Liaise with property owners, contractors, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to provide instruction and guidance on construction activity and by-law enforcement.
- Investigate complaints and apply enforcement regarding contraventions of statutes, regulations, and bylaws.
- Advise the Ministry of Labour on unsafe working conditions and participate in investigations.
- Inspect fire-damaged or unsafe buildings to determine the extent of damage and required repairs or replacement.
- Inspect for partial and complete occupancy clearances.
- Prepare evidence for presentation before the provincial courts and represent the City in civil litigation.
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, combined with an additional year of post-secondary education in a related field.
- Provincial Qualifications from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs in General Legal/Process, H.V.A.C. House and Building Services, or Plumbing House and Plumbing All Buildings.
- Experience and education in the design and installation of building, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
- Experience reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and data sheets pertaining to HVAC systems installations.
- Understanding of private and municipal drainage, municipal road and sewer construction, and on-site sewage systems.
- Experience in a computerized office environment and familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite of Products.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and other related standards.
- Knowledge of life safety systems and egress/exiting requirements.
- Knowledge and understanding of various municipal bylaws.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Good problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Knowledge and ability to apply the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations relevant to building construction.
- Class 'G' Driver's License and access to a properly insured vehicle.
- Membership with the Ontario Plumbing Inspectors Association (OPIA) or the Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Institute (HRAI) is considered an asset.
- Membership with the Ontario Building Officials Association along with CBCO designation is considered an asset.
