Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Building Inspector to join our team at the City of Windsor. As a Building Inspector, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations, conducting site inspections, and providing technical expertise to stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough site inspections to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations
  • Verify that construction and demolition activities meet approved plans and standards
  • Investigate complaints and apply enforcement actions as necessary
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to contractors, architects, and engineers
  • Review plans and specifications to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations
  • Collaborate with other divisions and agencies to determine compliance with planning agreements
  • Prepare detailed and accurate technical reports
  • Represent the City in civil litigation and provide evidence in court
  • Respond to public inquiries and provide information on building codes and regulations
  • Issue orders for compliance and file court charges as necessary
Requirements
  • Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma plus 3 years of post-secondary education in Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Provincial Qualifications from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs in General Legal or CBO Legal, House, Small Buildings, Large Buildings, Plumbing – House, Plumbing – All Buildings, HVAC – House, Building Services, Building Structural, Detection, Lighting and Power
  • Valid Class 'G' Driver's License and access to a properly insured vehicle
  • Experience in a computerized office environment and familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite of Products
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and other related standards
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public
  • Good problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional Provincial Qualifications in 'Complex Buildings' and 'On-site Sewage'
  • Current Certificate of Qualification under the Apprenticeship and Tradesperson's Qualifications Act as a sheet metal worker
  • O.A.C.E.T.T. Certification or A.A.T.O. Certification as an Engineering or Architectural Technician or Technologist
  • Membership with the Ontario Building Officials Association along with CBCO designation
