APL stands at the forefront of laboratory medicine, delivering extensive laboratory services across Alberta. Our Genetics and Genomics division excels in providing thorough genetic and genomic assessments in molecular diagnostics, constitutional and cancer cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, and newborn screening.

Role Responsibilities:

As a Clinical Laboratory Geneticist, you will play a pivotal role in our medical and scientific leadership team, tasked with:

  1. Managing genetic testing and analysis on patient specimens utilizing a variety of methodologies, including PCR, DNA/RNA sequencing, gene panels, exomes, and cytogenetic assessments.
  2. Deciphering intricate genetic data, focusing on the identification of genetic mutations, variants, and chromosomal irregularities pertinent to patient diagnoses.
  3. Collaborating with medical professionals and genetic counselors to incorporate genetic insights into patient care strategies.
  4. Ensuring adherence to all regulatory standards and quality assurance protocols within the clinical laboratory environment.
  5. Keeping abreast of the latest developments in clinical genetics and molecular diagnostics to improve testing precision and operational efficiency.
  6. Engaging in research and development projects aimed at enhancing genetic testing techniques and broadening test offerings.
  7. Providing education and mentorship to medical students, residents, clinical fellows, and laboratory staff, with opportunities for classroom instruction at the University of Alberta.

This position will report to the Provincial Medical/Scientific Director and will work closely with the North Sector Program Medical Lead, alongside the Molecular Genetics Lab Head, who will guide daily responsibilities and tasks. There are opportunities for cross-coverage in genetics laboratories based on operational requirements and the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will pursue a Clinical appointment at the University of Alberta.

Essential Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Genetics or a related discipline, along with board certification in Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, or Molecular Genetics by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (CCMG) or equivalent certification from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG). This role demands exceptional analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on leadership development. Candidates must exhibit effective communication abilities, experience in quality assurance, operational efficiency, and appropriateness of care.

Additional Qualifications:

Interested individuals are encouraged to submit their application through the APL career portal, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the contact details of three references. This position is eligible for APL Sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of two years of experience and those holding dual board certification in molecular/cytogenetics, along with demonstrated relevant clinical and academic experience.
