Our Genetics and Genomics division is dedicated to providing thorough genetic and genomic testing in molecular diagnostics, constitutional and cancer cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, and newborn screening.

Role Responsibilities:

As a Clinical Laboratory Geneticist, you will play a pivotal role in our medical and scientific leadership team, tasked with:

  1. Managing genetic testing and analysis on patient samples utilizing various methodologies, including PCR, DNA/RNA sequencing, gene panels, exomes, and cytogenetic assessments.
  2. Deciphering intricate genetic data, including the identification of genetic mutations, variants, and chromosomal irregularities pertinent to patient diagnoses.
  3. Collaborating with medical specialists and genetic counselors to incorporate genetic insights into patient care strategies.
  4. Ensuring adherence to all regulatory standards and quality assurance protocols within the clinical laboratory environment.
  5. Keeping abreast of the latest developments in clinical genetics and molecular diagnostics to improve testing precision and effectiveness.
  6. Engaging in research and development projects aimed at enhancing genetic testing techniques and broadening test offerings.
  7. Providing education and mentorship to medical students, residents, clinical fellows, and laboratory staff, with opportunities for classroom instruction at the University of Alberta.

This position will report to the Provincial Medical/Scientific Director and will work closely with the North Sector Program Medical Lead, as well as the Molecular Genetics Lab Head, who will guide daily responsibilities and tasks. There are opportunities for cross-coverage in the genetics laboratories based on operational requirements and the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate.

Essential Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Genetics or a related discipline, along with board certification in Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, or Molecular Genetics from the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (CCMG) or equivalent certification from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG). This role demands exceptional analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on leadership development. Candidates must demonstrate effective communication abilities, experience in quality assurance, operational efficiency, and appropriateness of care.

Additional Qualifications:

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their application through the APL career portal, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact details for three references. This position is available for APL Sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be granted to candidates with a minimum of 2 years of experience and those holding dual board certification in molecular/cytogenetics, as well as those with relevant clinical and academic experience.

Security Screening:

A satisfactory criminal record check and/or Vulnerable Sector Search is required prior to commencing work. Additionally, all employees have an ongoing obligation to disclose any charges or convictions that may arise during their employment with APL.
