Position Overview: APL is currently seeking a Board Certified PhD Clinical Lab Scientist with specialized certification in Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, or Molecular Genetics to enhance our Genetics and Genomics division.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee genetic testing and analysis on patient samples utilizing advanced techniques such as PCR, DNA/RNA sequencing, gene panels, exomes, and cytogenetic analysis.
  • Interpret intricate genetic data, identifying mutations, variants, and chromosomal abnormalities critical to patient diagnoses.
  • Collaborate with medical specialists and genetic counsellors to integrate genetic insights into patient care strategies.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory guidelines and uphold quality assurance standards within the clinical laboratory.
  • Stay informed on the latest advancements in clinical genetics and molecular diagnostics to enhance testing precision and efficiency.
  • Engage in research and development projects aimed at refining genetic testing methodologies and broadening test offerings.
  • Provide teaching and mentorship to medical students, residents, clinical fellows, and laboratory staff, with opportunities for classroom instruction at the University of Alberta.

Reporting Structure: This role reports to the Provincial Medical/Scientific Director and collaborates closely with the North Sector Program Medical Lead and the Molecular Genetics Lab Head.

Qualifications: Candidates should possess a PhD in Genetics or a related discipline, along with board certification in Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, or Molecular Genetics from the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (CCMG) or equivalent certification from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG).

Successful candidates will demonstrate effective communication skills, experience in quality assurance, operational efficiency, and appropriateness of care.

Experience Preference: Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of 2 years of experience and dual board certification in molecular/cytogenetics, as well as those with relevant clinical and academic experience.
