Job Overview:

As a Genetics Laboratory Technologist I, you will engage in the execution and analysis of both standard and intricate assessments for a variety of genetic disorders utilizing molecular and cytogenetic methodologies in accordance with established protocols. Your role will also encompass the entry of results into the laboratory information system (LIS), generation of reports, quality assurance, proficiency evaluations, adherence to laboratory safety standards, literature analysis, test method assessment, and documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain laboratory equipment and inventory.
  • Provide training to students and fellows/residents.
  • Participate in accreditation processes.
  • Conduct pre-analytical testing procedures, including accessioning.

Unit and Program: Genetics and Genomics North

Primary Location: U of A Hospital

Employment Type: Full-Time Temporary with Benefits

Required Qualifications: Completion of a Bachelor's degree along with an advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics. Active or eligible for registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Additional Qualifications: Successful completion of a Genetics Technology Graduate Diploma Program or equivalent, with relevant experience in a clinical Cytogenetics and/or Molecular Genetics laboratory. Attention to detail and proficiency in both manual and automated techniques are essential. Ability to identify testing anomalies and resolve them effectively is required.

Preferred Skills: A solid understanding of analytical techniques, coupled with strong problem-solving, decision-making, and troubleshooting abilities. An organized, independent worker who is also a collaborative team player dedicated to delivering high-quality patient care. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are vital for effective interaction with colleagues and other healthcare professionals.
