Your Opportunity:
Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is in search of a Board Certified PhD Clinical Lab Scientist with subspecialty certification in Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, or Molecular Genetics. APL stands as a prominent entity in laboratory medicine, delivering extensive laboratory services across Alberta. The Genetics and Genomics division is dedicated to providing thorough genetic and genomic testing, encompassing molecular diagnostics, constitutional and cancer cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, and newborn screening.
Role Overview:As a Clinical Laboratory Geneticist, you will play a pivotal role within our medical and scientific leadership team, tasked with:
- Supervising genetic testing and analysis on patient samples utilizing various methodologies, including PCR, DNA/RNA sequencing, gene panels and exomes, and/or cytogenetic analysis.
- Deciphering intricate genetic data, identifying genetic mutations, variants, and chromosomal abnormalities pertinent to patient diagnoses.
- Collaborating with medical specialists and genetic counselors to incorporate genetic insights into patient care strategies.
- Ensuring adherence to all regulatory standards and quality assurance protocols within the clinical laboratory.
- Keeping abreast of the latest developments in clinical genetics and molecular diagnostics to enhance testing precision and efficiency.
- Engaging in research and development projects aimed at refining genetic testing techniques and broadening test offerings.
- Providing education and mentorship to medical students, residents, clinical fellows, and laboratory staff, with opportunities for classroom instruction at the University of Alberta.
This position operates under the guidance of the Provincial Medical/Scientific Director, in conjunction with the North Sector Program Medical Lead, and will collaborate closely with the Molecular Genetics Lab Head for daily responsibilities and activities. Opportunities for cross-coverage in genetics laboratories are available based on operational requirements and the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will seek a Clinical appointment at the University of Alberta.
Required Qualifications:A Ph.D. in Genetics or a related discipline, alongside board certification in Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, or Molecular Genetics, by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (CCMG), or equivalent certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG). Board eligible candidates will also be considered within the appropriate compensation range. This role necessitates exceptional analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on leadership development. Candidates must exhibit effective communication skills, experience in quality assurance, operational efficiency, and appropriateness of care.

Preferred Qualifications:Preference will be accorded to candidates with a minimum of 2 years of experience and possessing dual board certification in molecular/cytogenetics, as well as those with demonstrated relevant clinical and academic experience.
