The brand also supports over 300,000 children participating in various sports leagues across Canada and the United States. As our guests' experiences become increasingly digital, we are innovating to enhance consumer interactions.

RBI's Global Privacy Program is evolving to address heightened regulatory and enforcement risks, societal expectations regarding data ethics, and innovative business models. We are expanding our team and seeking a Legal Director, Privacy & Data Protection to be based in our Toronto office. This role will report to the Global VP, Privacy Officer at RBI and will be pivotal in leading RBI's Global Privacy Program in Canada, addressing legal and compliance issues related to privacy, security, and data protection.

The successful candidate will serve as a vital legal advisor and business partner to cross-functional teams at RBI. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience collaborating with data protection supervisory authorities and will have established relationships with these authorities in Canada.

Primary responsibilities - What you'll do:

  • Spearhead the development and execution of RBI's Global Privacy & Data Protection Program in Canada.
  • Design and implement privacy processes, protocols, and controls essential for a modern and proactive privacy function.
  • Act as the primary contact for all privacy-related matters in Canada and guide external counsel as necessary.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance for privacy, security, and data matters in Canada.
  • Serve as the main expert and resource on these issues for local teams.
  • Provide legal guidance and daily support to legal colleagues and business stakeholders on privacy, security, and data matters.
  • Document, prioritize, and communicate clear privacy requirements for product initiatives and releases.
  • Educate and advise business teams on new data, privacy, and ethical uses, providing strategies to address privacy and data governance considerations.
  • Assess the impact of privacy laws, regulatory guidance, and enforcement actions.
  • Lead responses to regulatory inquiries and investigations, incident/breach responses, and intensified data subject requests.
  • Draft, negotiate, structure, and advise on complex agreements involving partnerships, technology transactions, and data protection matters.
  • Ensure compliance of commercial relationships with applicable laws and internal privacy, security, and compliance policies.
  • Provide strategic legal and business advice to foster long-term relationships with clients and partners.

What you'll bring:

Experience:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent legal degree and membership in good standing with a provincial or territorial law society.
  • 10 to 15 years of post-Bar admission experience, ideally a blend of law firm and in-house experience (experience in tech and/or hospitality sectors is preferred).
  • 5 to 10 years of relevant experience in privacy, data protection, and compliance.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of global data privacy laws, particularly those in Canada and the EU.
  • Experience in implementing privacy management programs.
  • Broad understanding of evolving priorities, trends, legislative and regulatory requirements, and their potential impacts on privacy programs and organizational goals.
  • Experience handling incidents and data breaches.
  • Familiarity with regulatory investigations.
  • Strong background in technology transactions, commercial law, privacy, and data protection.
  • Proficient negotiator with substantial transactional expertise.
  • Proven ability to manage client relationships effectively.
  • Demonstrated capacity to identify issues and connect insights across business units regarding data privacy, security, and compliance matters.

  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability.

  • Bilingual in French and English.
  • Privacy or cybersecurity certifications (CIPP/E, CIPP/US, ISACA, etc.).
  • Business and work experience beyond the legal context, including international exposure.
