Our Opportunity

RBI is seeking a highly skilled Legal Director, Privacy & Data Protection to join our team in Toronto. As a key member of our Global Privacy Program, you will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of our data protection strategy in Canada, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and providing expert advice on privacy and data protection matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of RBI's Global Privacy & Data Protection Program in Canada
  • Design and implement privacy processes, protocols, and controls to ensure a proactive and modern privacy function
  • Provide expert advice on privacy and data protection matters to cross-functional teams and external stakeholders
  • Oversee legal and regulatory compliance for privacy, security, and data matters in Canada
  • Collaborate with data protection supervisory authorities and establish relationships with key stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external counsel and other key partners
  • Provide strategic legal and business advice to facilitate and develop long-term relationships with clients and partners

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or Juris Doctor (JD) and a member in good standing with a provincial or territorial law society
  • 10-15 years of post-Bar admission experience, preferably a combination of law firm and in-house experience
  • 5-10 years of relevant privacy, data protection, and compliance experience
  • Sophisticated knowledge of global data privacy laws, with a focus on data privacy laws in Canada, the Canadian provinces, the EU, and other key jurisdictions
  • Experience implementing privacy management programs and collaborating with data protection supervisory authorities
  • Strong analytical and negotiation skills, with excellent attention to detail and business acumen
  • Ability to make smart decisions and balance risk in ambiguous situations
  • Excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to operate autonomously and contribute to cross-functional teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • French/English bilingual capabilities
  • Privacy or cybersecurity credentials (CIPP/E, CIPP/US, ISACA...)
  • Business and work experience outside the legal context, including internationally
