Job Title: Program Services Caseworker - Drop In Worker

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Program Services Caseworker - Drop In Worker to join our team at The Salvation Army. As a key member of our team, you will provide essential support services to homeless and street-involved youth, empowering them to achieve their goals and improve their overall well-being.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide a safe and welcoming environment for drop-in clients, ensuring their physical and emotional needs are met.
  • Develop and implement programming, clubs, and schedules for drop-in clients, promoting socialization and community engagement.
  • Advise clients of available services and resources, both within the center and in the community.
  • Connect clients with housing, health, and social services, providing referrals and support as needed.
  • Build relationships with clients, fostering trust and understanding to facilitate effective support.
  • Collaborate with shelter caseworkers to identify housing opportunities and provide referrals.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy work environment, reporting any safety issues to the Program Services Coordinator.
  • Provide crisis counseling and one-on-one support, addressing the unique needs of each client.
  • Support clients in navigating systems and accessing resources, advocating on their behalf when necessary.
  • Research and maintain relevant referral sources and programs, ensuring clients receive the best possible support.
  • Conduct regular facility security and maintenance checks, reporting any issues to the Maintenance Request Binder.
Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client documentation, forms, and logbook entries.
  • Facilitate the commencement of RRTIP for outreach clients, ensuring timely and effective support.
  • Enter data into HIFIS, tracking statistics and other pertinent information for reporting purposes.
  • Compile and maintain relevant contacts within the systems, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration.
  • Collect and track statistics and other pertinent information for reporting purposes.
  • Receive and record donations according to policy, ensuring accurate tracking and reporting.
  • Answer inquiries pertaining to the Drop-in Centre, providing accurate and helpful information.
  • Issue taxi vouchers and transit tickets, recording transactions according to policy.
  • Record physical facility/building problems in the Maintenance Request Binder.
Service Responsibilities:
  • Promote positive and supportive attitudes toward clients experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
  • Empower clients to work towards their goals, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Act as an advocate and positive role model for clients in the community, promoting The Salvation Army's mission and values.
  • Represent The Salvation Army and its clients at community meetings, fostering partnerships and collaborations.
Organizational Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to The Salvation Army's standards and values, ensuring consistency and integrity in all aspects of work.
  • Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and service training, staying informed and engaged.
  • Engage in formal evaluation sessions with the Program Services Coordinator, ensuring ongoing growth and development.
  • Read and follow the Policy & Procedures Manual and Employees Handbook, ensuring compliance and adherence.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and coworkers, upholding The Salvation Army's commitment to trust and respect.
  • Become familiar with the provision of the position description and operations manual, ensuring a deep understanding of role and responsibilities.
  • Make suggestions to improve efficiency, working conditions, or procedures, representing The Salvation Army in a professional manner.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 84 hours biweekly.
  • Schedule and shift designated by the Program Services Coordinator.
  • Onsite working conditions, including a shelter environment.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • College diploma in Social Sciences field.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Preference for experience with youth homelessness, with one to three years of experience an asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Mental Health/Addictions.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of and a commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and equity.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract for review and verification, an asset.
  • Good knowledge of community resources.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Problem-solving skills essential, with a high degree of confidentiality required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Good interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully, providing an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for The Salvation Army's mission and purpose in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
