Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Program Services Caseworker to join our team at The Salvation Army. As a key member of our Drop In Center, you will provide essential support services to homeless and street-involved youth, empowering them to achieve stability and independence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a safe and welcoming environment for Drop In clients, ensuring their comfort and well-being.
  • Offer orientation and support to clients, connecting them with available resources and services.
  • Develop and implement programming, clubs, and schedules to engage and support Drop In clients.
  • Advise clients of available services and support, promoting positive relationships and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with shelter Caseworkers to identify housing opportunities and provide referrals.
  • Ensure work conditions comply with Health and Safety standards, reporting any safety issues to the Program Services Coordinator.
  • Build relationships with Drop In clients, providing crisis counseling and one-on-one support as needed.
  • Develop effective working relationships with community members, agencies, and coworkers.
  • Provide advocacy and support to clients, navigating systems to achieve efficient and effective results.
  • Research and maintain relevant referral sources and programs to benefit clients.
  • Conduct regular facility security and maintenance checks, tracking issues in the Maintenance Request Binder.
  • Assist with supervision of clients, ensuring their needs are met and followed as required.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate client documentation, forms, and logbook entries.
  • Facilitate commencement of RRTIP for outreach clients.
  • Enter required data into HIFIS, compiling and maintaining relevant contacts within the system.
  • Collect and track statistics and other pertinent information for reporting purposes.
  • Receive and record donations according to policy.
  • Answer inquiries pertaining to the Drop-in Centre, issuing taxi vouchers and transit tickets as needed.
  • Record physical facility/building problems in the Maintenance Request Binder.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Services Coordinator.
Service Responsibilities
  • Promote positive and supportive attitudes toward clients experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
  • Empower clients to work towards their goals, acting as an advocate and positive role model.
  • Represent The Salvation Army and its clients at community meetings.
Organizational Responsibilities
  • Adhere to standards consistent with The Salvation Army's values and philosophy.
  • Participate fully in staff meetings and service training.
  • Engage in formal evaluation sessions with the Program Services Coordinator.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and coworkers.
  • Read and follow the Policy & Procedures Manual and the Employees Handbook.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Working Conditions
  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 84 hours biweekly.
  • Schedule and shift designated by the Program Services Coordinator.
  • Onsite working conditions in a shelter environment.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • College diploma in Social Sciences field.
Experience and Knowledge
  • Preference for experience with youth homelessness (one to three years).
  • Knowledge and understanding of Mental Health/Addictions.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of anti-racism, anti-oppression, and equity.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and current copy of Driver's abstract (asset).
  • Good knowledge of community resources.
Skills and Capabilities
  • Problem-solving skills essential, with a high degree of confidentiality required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for The Salvation Army's mission and purpose.
