As a key member of our Drop In Center, you will provide essential support services to homeless and street-involved youth, empowering them to achieve their goals and improve their overall well-being.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide a safe and welcoming environment for Drop In clients, ensuring their comfort and dignity at all times.
  • Offer orientation and support to clients, helping them navigate our services and connect with community resources.
  • Develop and implement programming, clubs, and schedules that cater to the needs and interests of Drop In clients.
  • Advise clients of available services and support, both within our center and in the community.
  • Provide housing, health, and social services referrals, as well as connect clients with shelter Caseworkers for potential housing opportunities.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy work environment, reporting any safety issues to the Program Services Coordinator.
  • Build relationships with clients, fostering trust and understanding.
  • Develop effective working relationships with community members, representatives of other departments, agencies, and co-workers.
  • Provide crisis counseling and one-on-one support, as well as brief interventions to address client needs.
  • Work with high-needs clients, providing individualized support and counseling as required.
  • Support clients in navigating systems, ensuring efficient and effective results.
  • Advocate for clients when necessary.
  • Research and maintain relevant referral sources and programs that benefit clients.
  • Conduct regular Drop In Facility Security/Safety and Maintenance Checks, tracking any issues in the Maintenance Request Binder.
  • Work with the Supervisor to assist with client supervision.
  • Ensure client needs are met and followed, as required.
Administration:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client documentation, forms, and logbook entries.
  • Facilitate the commencement of RRTIP for outreach clients.
  • Enter required data into HIFIS, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Compile and maintain relevant contacts within the systems.
  • Collect and track statistics and other pertinent information for reporting purposes.
  • Receive and record donations according to policy.
  • Answer inquiries pertaining to the Drop In Center.
  • Issue Taxi Vouchers/Transit Tickets and record according to policy.
  • Record physical facility/building problems in the Maintenance Request Binder.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Services Coordinator.
Service Responsibilities:
  • Promote positive and supportive attitudes toward clients experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
  • Empower clients to work towards their goals.
  • Act as an advocate and positive role model for clients in the community.
  • Represent The Salvation Army and our clients at community meetings.
Organizational Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to standards consistent with The Salvation Army's values and philosophy, as well as those of Residential Services and the Regional Municipality of York.
  • Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and service training.
  • Engage in formal evaluation sessions with the Program Services Coordinator at 3 months during the first year of employment and annually thereafter.
  • Read and follow the Policy & Procedures Manual and the Employees Handbook.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and coworkers of The Salvation Army Sutton Clients Shelter and Sutton Youth Shelter.
  • Become familiar with the provision of the position description & operations manual, which will be provided for each job position.
  • As required and applicable, make suggestions to improve efficiency, working conditions, or procedures to the Program Services Coordinator, and represent the Organization in a professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Working Conditions:
  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 84 hours biweekly.
  • Schedule – shift – designated by the Program Services Coordinator.
  • Onsite working conditions.
  • Shelter environment.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • College diploma in Social Sciences field.
Experience and Knowledge:
  • Preference to experience with youth homelessness is an asset (one to three years).
  • Knowledge and understanding of Mental Health/Addictions.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of and a commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and equity.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, an asset.
  • Good knowledge of community resources.
Skills and Capabilities:
  • Problem-solving skills essential. The responsibilities associated with this position demand a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (Processing/Desktop, Publishing, Spreadsheet/Graphing, Database computer skills essential).
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Must have good interpersonal/time management skills.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
