Your Role

We are seeking a Director of National Grants and Foundations to be an integral part of our team at Make-A-Wish Canada. Reporting to the VP of National Development, this pivotal position will be responsible for securing, managing, and expanding a diverse portfolio of grants and foundation partnerships nationwide.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Strategic Planning and Development:
    • Formulate and implement a comprehensive strategy for grants and foundations that aligns with organizational objectives.
    • Identify new funding avenues and devise tailored approaches to engage potential grant organizations and foundations.
    • Collaborate with the VP of National Development and regional chapter leaders to synchronize grant initiatives with broader organizational strategies.
  2. Grant Writing and Management:
    • Oversee the grant application process from proposal creation to submission, ensuring high-quality, persuasive narratives and comprehensive documentation.
    • Manage a portfolio of grant-funded projects, including monitoring deadlines, reporting obligations, and compliance.
    • Coordinate with the mission team to collect data, outcomes, and success stories for grant reports and proposals.
    • Manage and enhance revenue of $1.7M, with ongoing growth and investment anticipated in the future.
  3. Relationship Building and Stewardship:
    • Conduct discovery meetings to assess alignment with granting organizations.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with foundation representatives, grant officers, and other key stakeholders.
    • Organize and lead meetings, presentations, and site visits with current and prospective donors.
    • Create and implement stewardship plans to ensure ongoing engagement and support from donors.
  4. Team Leadership and Development:
    • Supervise, mentor, and guide two direct reports.
    • Encourage a collaborative and supportive team environment, promoting professional growth and development.
    • Chair the National Virtual Grants and Foundations Team, which includes National and Regional development teams focused on Grants and Foundations fundraising.
    • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to enhance team effectiveness.
  5. Prospect Research:
    • Oversee prospect research to identify potential grant opportunities and foundation partnerships.
    • Establish and maintain a prospect clearance process with national and regional partners.
    • Collaborate closely with the team to develop strategies for engaging and soliciting prospects.

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of experience in grant writing, foundation relations, or fundraising within a nonprofit setting.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nonprofit Management, Research, Business, Communications, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated success in securing substantial grant funding from foundations and other granting entities.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian foundations and granting organizations.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and presentation skills, with the ability to craft persuasive and compelling narratives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills, capable of engaging and inspiring diverse stakeholders, including donors and senior volunteers.
  • Highly organized with strong project management capabilities and attention to detail.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Proficient in SalesForce or similar CRM systems.
  • A clear Criminal Background Check will be required.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid work model (2 days in-office, 3 days remote per week) with occasional requirements to work outside of standard office hours.
  • Occasional day or overnight travel may be necessary.
