We are seeking an experienced law enforcement leader to provide critical leadership to the Lethbridge Police Service Community Peace Officer (CPO) program including the operational role of a CPO, recruiting, and overall management of the program.
In this role you will be expected to engage with the community and foster a number of collaborative relationships with stakeholders to maintain and enhance public awareness and strengthen our community relationships.
- This _**_temporary/term position_**_ falls under the protection of a collective agreement associated to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 70 contract. CUPE Local 70 represents employees are employed in number of civic departments within the City of Lethbridge._
**As the CPO Sergeant, you will**:
- Provide leadership and supervision to Community Peace Officers
- Ensure CPO’s operate within the scope of their authorized authorities
- Review submitted reports, updating policy, and the overall management of the CPO Unit to ensure that it is operating within provincially mandated policy.
- The day to day administration of the CPO Unit completing payroll, performance assessments, mentoring and training.
- Adhere to Solicitor General reporting requirements, provide regular reports showing statistical breakdowns as required including provincially mandated annual reports
- Manage the department budget for the CPO program
- Approve payroll and ensure time sheets are accurate, including managing the labour force to ensure proper coverage (vacation, sick leave)
- Ensure completion of required performance appraisals, resolve and document work related issues including disciplinary matters
- Oversees the operation of the Judicial Interim Release Office (JIR), ensuring that the JIR officer position is adequately staffed by CPOs, new CPOs are properly trained in the role of JIR officer, monitors JIR officers work, collaborates with Court Liaison Unit/Records Management Unit to decrease process errors
- Investigate complaints and disputes and take appropriate action to give assistance and enforce the laws that are within the Community Peace Officer’s authority
- Prepare investigative reports, legal documents, court information and testify in court as required
- Collaborating with community stakeholders, participating in meetings to better understand concerns
- Undertake other tasks and responsibilities as required within the scope of the position, as assigned by the Field Operations Support Section Staff Sergeant
**The successful applicant for this position will have**:
- **A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Community Peace Officer or in a role directly related to law enforcement such as conservation, bylaw, Sheriff, Police Officer, etc.**:
- **At least two years of experience in a supervisory role is strongly preferred.**:
- **Proven leadership, supervisory, and conflict resolution skills are essential for this position as are strong interpersonal skills including tact and diplomacy with a strong emphasis on customer service.**:
- This position requires a Community Peace Officer (Level 1) Appointment as well as an Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license and a valid First Aid and CPR training certificate.
- Other credentials such as a law enforcement diploma from a recognized institution, emergency vehicle operation training, or Commercial Vehicle Weight Enforcement training would be considered an asset.
**Wage**:$51.19 per hour |2024 Rate.
**Hours**: Shift Work (Morning and Afternoon Shifts Monday to Friday)
Average of 40 hours per week (Flexible/Compressed Work Week is available)
Shift adjustments for evening/weekend work will be required as the position responsibilities dictate

- Duration of the hiring process may take approximately two months.
