Disability Administrative Assistant

**Job Profile**:
The Disability Administrative Assistant is responsible for the administration of work related and non-work related disability claims. The role includes the adjudication of benefits, coordination of return to work plans where appropriate, and processing STD and LTD claims for payment.
- *This is a temporary contract for a maternity leave coverage period up to a maximum of 18 months._
**Job Responsibilities / Duties**:
1. To continually administer open Long-Term and Short-Term disability claim cases, including:
- Analyze claims and determine the benefits due pursuant to the disability plan;
- Review complex medical information to determine if the claimant fits the definition of disabled per the plan requirements;
- Communicate with the claimants regarding their case status;
- Ensure disability claims comply with plan provisions;
- Inform the claimant of the documentation required to process their claim, the associated time frames, and the required payment information, and assist the claimant in preparing the same;
- Provide thorough review of contested claims and assist the department manager in investigative efforts;
- Evaluate and arrange appropriate referrals of claims to outside parties for independent medical evaluations, functional capability evaluations and other related disability activities;
- Assist claimants with appropriate return-to-work steps as directed;
- Coordination of temporary and/or permanent accommodations;
- Respond to Service Canada requests for information;
- Refers cases as appropriate to the department manager;
- Assist the department manager in appeals, grievances, arbitrations and other legal proceedings as required, including Human Rights.
2. To perform day-to-day administrative duties associated with processing disability claims, including:
- Processing incoming department mail;
- Providing front-line customer service to members;
- Completing necessary paperwork and maintaining complete and organized files on each claimant;
- Drafting reports, presentations and other documents in support of the department manager.
3. Other duties as assigned by the Department Manager and/or the Human Resources Department.
**Job Requirements**:
- Must have 2-3 years minimum of Disability Claims experience;
- Bachelor of Disability Management or in a health related field would be considered an asset;
- Experience in a unionized construction environment;
- Short-term and long-term disability adjudication experience;
- Knowledge of Disability Management and related procedures;
- Strong, proven medical knowledge;
- Strong administration experience;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Critical thinking and analytical skills;
- Strong customer service skills;
- Ability to handle emotionally difficult issues maturely and work well under pressure;
- Ability to use tact and discretion to maintain information in the strictest of confidence;
- Conflict resolution and negotiation skills;
- Strong organization and prioritization skills;
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint;
- Strong computer literacy and technical skills to efficiently utilize digital systems and navigate digital/automated departmental processes;
- Ability to learn an internal database system.
**Work Conditions**:
- Fast-paced, high-volume environment;
- Manual dexterity required to operate computer and peripherals;
- This is an onsite, in-person role with no option to work remotely.
**Job Type**: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 18 months
