**What can I expect to do in this role?**: In this role you will:

- Coordinate the work of Unit Pathologist Assistants by: assigning tasks both post mortem and non-post mortem related; developing work and on-call schedules; monitoring attendance; coordinating time off and overtime within operational requirements; providing input into performance appraisals and grievances; instructing on appropriate policies, procedures and best practices; training new staff and Pathologist Assistants from outside agencies.
- Provide technical expertise, guidance and training as necessary to Pathologist Assistants in the handling of complex cases and advise autopsy staff of biohazard concerns.
- Participate in Daily Morning Rounds at the Forensic Pathology Unit by providing background information for cases to be examined that day and describing post mortem findings from previous day as required.
- Prepare for post mortem examination and assist with the more complicated post mortem examinations.
- Perform a variety of administrative functions and various related technical duties such as: maintenance and simple cleaning and repair of equipment; provision of forensic radiography service; sorting and disposal of forensic toxicology samples; oversee the storage and disposal of wet tissue from post mortem examinations.
- Assist the Manager in the development and maintenance of policies, procedures and best practices including disaster planning preparedness. Manager has the right to assign additional responsibilities.

**How do I qualify?**:
**Technical and Laboratory Knowledge**: You have:

- Laboratory techniques and practices in pathology, anatomy, histology, physiology, toxicology and continuity of evidence in order to assist Forensic Pathologists in conducting autopsies and to prepare required documentation.
- Knowledge of laboratory tests, autopsy techniques and procedures and principles in order to assist in conducting forensic autopsies
- Laboratory safety and awareness of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations to ensure compliance when performing responsibilities.
- Knowledge of risk management analysis and techniques and the requirements of the justice system related to handling of forensic evidence and samples in order to maintain continuity of the evidence by adhering to known procedures and practices for handling samples and testing materials.
- Quality improvement techniques and practices to monitor, analyze and assess outcomes of mortuary operations and services

**Problem Solving, Review and Reasoning skills**: You can:

- Prioritize cases, schedule post-mortems and can determine appropriate handling of evidentiary materials and samples.
- Provide technical direction to Pathologist Assistants in the handling of more complex cases, identify training and staff relations issues for referral to the Manager.
- Determine how to prepare items for storage and disposal.
- Manage daily handling, examining, and testing of human bodies, organs, tissues, and specimens whose history is unknown with attendant risk of exposure to infectious organisms requiring precaution due to biological hazards.
- Label and document forensic evidence and specimens with a high degree of accuracy and consistency in order to provide undisputable continuity of evidence.
- Inform management staff when unusual findings or information become apparent, especially while participating in post mortem examinations or when dealing with staffing issues/situations.
- Plan, coordinate and prioritize staff activities and meet deliverables in a fast-paced multifaceted environment.
