**About Our Opportunity**:
As the Consultation Coordinator reporting to the Director of Mi'kmaw Relations, you play a central coordination and file management role for Department consultations with the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia. You work closely with Department of Natural Resources and Renewables staff, the Office of L’nu Affairs and other provincial and federal departments, and the Mi’kmaq to support the Department in implementing the corporate approach to consultation as outlined in the Government of Nova Scotia Policy and Guidelines: Consultation with the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia.

You will also conduct research and analysis and develop policy advice on Aboriginal economic, social, cultural, and environmental interests in natural resources related matters, support Branches and Divisions in consultation and engagement efforts with the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia, and act with others in the Department to advance the relationship with the Aboriginal community.

**Primary Accountabilities**:
In this role, you will:

- Conduct pre-screening of proposed projects and work closely with the Office of L’Nu Affairs to advise on appropriate level of consultation to ensure fulfillment of the Crown’s constitutional Duty to Consult and coordinate the consultation process.
- Provide recommendations to the Department’s senior management on the adequacy of consultation conducted by the Department.
- Work directly with Aboriginal communities (and their associated organizations) to identify potential impacts to treaty and aboriginal rights, interests, and opportunities related to natural resource initiatives, and processes and coordinates departmental input and responses where appropriate, and to support accommodations for any identified impacts.
- Represent the department by leading and participating in committees and working groups on an intergovernmental, interdepartmental, and/or tripartite basis.

**Qualifications and Experience**:
To be successful in this position, you hold a Bachelor’s degree and at least six (6) years of experience in policy-related research, analysis and evaluation or environmental analysis or lands management. An acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. You are able to demonstrate a strong work ethic, are well organized and have the ability to work efficiently with mínimal supervision. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both orally and in writing, are required. You have experience in networking and engaging a variety of stakeholders forming collaborative and strategic relationships. You can also demonstrate knowledge and skills in consulting and facilitation processes. You possess advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve complex and emerging issues and identify innovative solutions.

You have experience in and are skilled in coordinating and managing complex files and you have an understanding of the government regulatory environment. As a public servant representing the Province in consultations often involving the Mi’kmaq and the Government of Canada, you must be highly professional, and exercise sound judgment around issues requiring a high degree of tact and diplomacy.

Assets for this role include:

- Sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Treaty rights in Canada, preferably in Nova Scotia
- Experience in project management
- Familiarity with Aboriginal consultation processes

In addition to the above, you are a highly organized individual who is focused on continuously improving quality and has a solution-focused approach. You are responsive and able to prioritize a high volume of competing and sometimes rapid requests. You are an excellent relationship builder, a self-starter with the ability to initiate tasks with little supervision and possess great organization skills. As a skilled communicator, you possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
