**About Us**:
The Office of L’nu Affairs is responsible for coordinating Nova Scotia's approach to Indigenous issues. The Office leads negotiations related to Aboriginal and Treaty rights with the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia and the Federal Government, coordinates and facilitates consultation between the Provincial Government and the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia, provides strategic policy advice to government on provincial interests relating to Indigenous affairs, and works with partners inside and outside government to increase public education, awareness, and understanding of Indigenous issues in the Province.

With the Mi'kmaq-Nova Scotia-Canada Tripartite Forum, the Made-in-Nova Scotia Process Negotiations, Treaty Education and our coordinating role in consultation efforts with the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia, we are on the road to developing a new relationship, one based on partnership, respect and mutual understanding.

Aboriginal consultation is an exciting, complex and dynamic field that supports the Province’s duty to consult obligations and reconciliation efforts with the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia.

As a Consultation Advisor reporting to the Director of Consultation, you play a central advisory, coordination and file management role for provincial consultations with the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia. You work closely with provincial and federal departments, the Mi’kmaq, and proponents to support the Province in implementing the corporate approach to consultation as outlined in the _Government of Nova Scotia Policy and Guidelines: Consultation with the Mi’kmaq or Nova Scotia_.

You provide consultation-related advice, options and guidance to line department staff, senior officials and decision-makers responsible for varied portfolios on projects of various scope, scale, and significance. In addition, you coordinate, plan, maintain curated records, and provide strategic support to several line departments in discharging their duty to consult with the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia on projects spanning multiple departments, groups and levels of government. In addition, you will conduct research and analysis on Aboriginal consultation issues to strengthen Nova Scotia’s innovative approach to consultation and ensure that the Province remains a recognized leader in this field.

This position forms part of a Consultation team at the Office of L’nu Affairs and is fundamental to the Province’s efforts to build and maintain positive and long-lasting relationships with Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia, their organizations, and elected Chiefs and Councils.

**About You**:
To be successful in this position, you hold a Bachelor’s degree in addition to several years of experience in policy-related research, analysis and evaluation or environmental analysis or lands management. An acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. You are able to demonstrate a strong work ethic, are well organized and have the ability to work efficiently with mínimal supervision. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both orally and in writing, are required. You have experience in networking and engaging a variety of stakeholders forming collaborative and strategic relationships. You can also demonstrate knowledge and skills in consulting and facilitation processes. You possess advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve complex and novel issues and identify innovative solutions.

You have experience in and are skilled in coordinating and managing complex files and you have an understanding of the government regulatory environment. As a public servant representing the Province in consultations often involving the Mi’kmaq and the Government of Canada, you must be highly professional, and exercise sound judgment around issues requiring a high degree of tact and diplomacy. Lastly, sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Treaty rights in Canada, preferably in Nova Scotia, is considered a strong asset.

Additional competencies required for this role are conceptual thinking, outcome focused, strategic orientation, initiative and intercultural diversity proficiency.

While not required, it is considered an asset if you have a Master’s degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with Aboriginal consultation processes would also be an asset.
