Job Summary

The CFI-funded Clean Energy Research Centre (CERC) at UBC was established in 2005. Currently it has more than 70 faculty members, over 50 postdocs and graduate students working in clean energy research and development at a 3000+ square feet CERC lab as well as other labs across the campus. The laboratory is shared by the departments of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and other departments in the faculty of Applied Science. A new CFI-funded Biorefining Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC) building has a 2500+ square foot lab space and hosts a number of new pieces of bioenergy research equipment. Our shared facilities at both CERC and BRIC buildings are key to our researchers, allowing them to develop unique research and innovative programs in clean energy as a solution to greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable development of the Canadian economy.

The CERC facility manager will be responsible for managing the operations of shared facilities, technical services administration, safety programs, interacting with users, and developing and implementing policies and strategies to ensure the safe and effective management and operation of the shared facilities housed within the CERC and BRIC buildings, both funded by Canada Foundation for Innovation.

Organizational Status

This Facility Manager reports to the Director of CERC/BRIC and the Facility Committee (the Committee), an advisory group of faculty members and technical staff who run the shared tools and instruments in CERC/BRIC. The Facility Manager may also report safety issues to the Safety Committee of Chemical and Biological Engineering which oversees the safety of facilities at CERC/BRIC. This position is responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the CERC/BRIC buildings and housed facilities.

Work Performed
- Manages the general building services and day-to-day operations of CERC/BRIC buildings and shared facilities to maintain productivity and efficiency including planning, prioritizing, implementing and managing projects and activities, facility maintenance, renovation, and space utilization.
- Identifies and recommends improvements with respect to current and future technical and instrumentation needs, products, materials and furnishings.
- Engages stakeholders to develop selection criteria for prioritizing and implementing facilities' needs and equipment.
- Advises and makes recommendations regarding the design, development and modification of current processes and procedures.
- Actively investigates and monitors the facility to prevent accidents and promote safe operations.
- Manages and monitors all service orders and training requests from facility personnel and clients. Liaises with users to receive and resolve complaints.
- Coordinates work of external service providers and ensures completion in accordance with requirements and specifications.
- Develops reports and interprets statistics related to the usage of shared facilities such as finance, provision of services, user satisfaction, etc. and provides advice and recommendations for improvement.
- Supports the implementation and use of lab administrative software platform for shared facility administration.
- Fosters strong working relationships with industry partners and key individuals, both internal and external, to promote techniques and instrumentation hosted at the Centre; Assisting the Director to create and promote a core facilities plan.
- Identifies opportunities to engage potential users and promote the shared facilities.
- Ensures that information on facilities, tools, and instruments is relevant and accurate.
