**Role Responsibilities**:

- The Director of Strategic Climate Policy is responsible for leading a team of technical and policy experts in the design, development, analysis and review of Alberta’s climate policy across all sectors. This position will also lead the development and ongoing review of the Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan and key policy contained within the plan.
- The incumbent will lead key climate policy in Alberta, including a focus on upstream conventional oil and gas methane emissions, oil sands emissions, renewable fuels regulations and policy, energy efficiency and other climate policy areas in Alberta.
- **Responsibilities include**:

- Advance the development and oversee the implementation, review and reporting of strategies, policies and programs pertaining to greenhouse gas emission reductions.
- Ensure Alberta greenhouse gas emission mitigation policy and programs are aligned with Government of Alberta objectives and priorities, and meet the needs of stakeholders, Albertans and communities.
- Support and represent Alberta's interests at the regional, cross-provincial/territorial, national and international levels related to climate mitigation policy.
- Provide effective leadership, strategic planning and support to a team of policy advisors and technical professionals.
- Build, maintain and grow trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and neighbouring jurisdictions as appropriate.
- Support emissions related policy development, review, and impact assessment, for other branch, division, department and Government of Alberta priorities, as needed.

**Qualifications**:
**Required**:

- A university degree (Masters preferred) in environmental science, political science, social science, business administration, economics, or other related fields.
- Minimum of 6 years extensive experience in managing policy advisors, strategic analysts, and managers in a complex environment.

Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.
- **This position requires thorough knowledge and skills in the following areas**:

- Detailed knowledge of the existing climate policy and programs within Alberta and current business plan goals and priorities within the Ministry of Environment & Protected Areas.
- Understanding of greenhouse gas emissions pricing and alternative regulatory approaches, emission reduction opportunities and challenges in Alberta and understanding of possible policies that could be applied in Alberta to achieve reductions and support economic growth.
- Strong ability to influence others and negotiating experience.
- Detailed knowledge of provincial and federal legislation and regulations as related to climate change, including Canadian Environmental Protection Act, Emissions Management and Climate Resilience Act, and the Oil Sands Emissions Limit Act, as well as other applicable legislation and regulations (i.e. Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Water Act, Alberta Land Stewardship Act) across the sustainable resources and environmental management-focused ministries.
