The Assistant Deputy Chiefs in Fire Rescue Operations are members of the EFRS leadership team that direct a group of Platoon Chiefs, Day Staff, and Chief of Special Operations to ensure the effective delivery of personnel and equipment. Reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief - Operations, the Assistant Deputy Chiefs operate with a high degree of autonomy to make day-to-day operational and human resource decisions consistent with EFRS’ short and long-term priorities. In close collaboration with the Deputy Fire Chief - Operations, the Assistant Deputy Chiefs ensure effective deployment of front-line resources and contribute directly to the strategic direction of Fire Rescue Operations.

**Goals and Deliverables**:

- Exercise a high degree of judgment in making decisions related to emerging operational challenges including but not limited to, supervising reports (feedback, coaching, evaluations), labour relations issues (hiring, conducting investigations, delivering corrective measures, grievances), and overseeing the performance and operational readiness of operations on a daily basis
- Leverage leadership skills to develop, coach and mentor staff
- Lead and collaborate with the development and implementation of work performance expectations and job standards for operations
- Development and implementation of short-range (1-2 year) strategies supporting Fire Rescue Operations
- Impact the design and implementation of processes and practices to drive continuous improvement, operational success, and effectiveness in providing services, while aligning with overall direction of EFRS
- Keep current with advances in business practices, technology and technical information to ensure the best value for services is delivered
- Ensure that projects are delivered on time, on budget and within scope
- Act on behalf of the Deputy Fire Chief on various committees and collaborate with internal and external partners
- Represent management in labour management and collective bargaining matters
- Ensure compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety standards and Enviso policies and procedures
- Assist with the development and review of policies, practices and frameworks, including the applicability of GBA+ to ensure equity

**Qualifications**:

- Diploma or Degree in Business, Fire Science or a related field
- Officer Training program from an approved program is considered an asset
- NFPA- Minimum Fire Officer Level 2 is considered an asset
- Seven (7)+ years experience within emergency services is required, including a minimum of three (3) years of leadership and supervisory experience
- Experience in a unionized environment working with Collective Bargaining Agreements
- Demonstrated experience working with multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience working with politically sensitive and complex projects in a public sector environment would be an asset
- A combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered

- Utilize knowledge of best practices, materials, tools, equipment and other methods related to operations
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with a variety of partners including senior management, staff at all levels, union representatives, City Council, businesses, and Edmontonians
- Foster a culture of professionalism and accountability through performance measurement and clear expectations
- Liaise with other fire services leadership and external agencies to facilitate collaborative relationships
- Develop and maintain a positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
