Edmonton Fire Rescue Emergency Communications Specialist

In this role, you will:

  • Represent the City of Edmonton in a professional and respectful manner
  • Receive, evaluate and prioritize emergency calls using strict fire protocols and deploy the appropriate resources
  • Provide callers with appropriate Prearrival and Postdispatch Instructions as per specific protocols
  • Direct the deployment of emergency apparatus
  • Provide communications, liaison services, operational support, and interagency coordination
  • Keep up to date with all Standard Operating Procedures, directives and guidelines
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 2 years experience in a relevant communications centre
  • OR
  • An Emergency Response Communication Certificate from a recognized postsecondary institution with a minimum of 6 months experience in a relevant communications centre
  • Must complete National Academy of Emergency Dispatch (NAED) Emergency Fire Dispatcher (EFD) certification within one (1) year of the start date
  • Basic Rescuer CPR certification
  • Ability to provide timely, accurate, professional customeroriented teamwork services while multitasking in a high volume, highstress work environment
  • Must demonstrate extensive knowledge of the City of Edmonton streets, roads, major routes, and commonplace locations
  • Applicants will undergo geographical, behavioural, multitasking and resiliency screening
  • Display the ability to effectively operate the Computer Aided Dispatch system and related interfaces systems in a fastpaced work environment
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and problemsolving skills with familiarity with fire operational and medical terminology
  • Ability to work 10 and 14hour shifts on a 24/7 rotating basis
  • Proven reliability with a consistent record of attendance at work
  • Work effectively in a team environment and the ability to multitask from a customer service perspective
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position; there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent)
