Indigenous Courtworker Assistant

**JOB SUMMARY**
The Odawa Native Friendship Centre is seeking applicants for one (1) full-time Indigenous Courtworker. The Indigenous Courtworker will assist existing Indigenous Criminal Courtworker with advocacy and supporting all Ottawa urban Indigenous youth and adults to better understand their rights, options, and responsibilities while navigating the criminal justice system. The Indigenous Courtworker will be responsible for the policies and directions as determined by the Board of Directors of the Centre and under the direct daily supervision of the Criminal Courtworker or designate.
Extensive on-site training will be conducted by existing Criminal Courtworker.
**REQUIREMENTS**
- Possess a strong passion for Indigenous Justice, laws, and rights;
- Possess education and/or extensive work-related experience in, the following fields: Indigenous Community Justice, Alternative Justice, Law, Criminology, Law and Justice, Social Work, Psychology, and Community Services;
- Have a minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated and related work experience within/around the criminal justice system;
- Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with emphasis on Colonization, Gladue Rights and Principles, family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, and community front-line services and programs;
- Satisfactory vulnerable sector check.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Support the existing Criminal Courtworker in managing caseload; and managing own case files with exceptional accuracy (maintain contact with clients, defence and other support workers between court dates, provide meaningful referrals to clients, advocate for alternative justice when appropriate, identify Gladue factors, etc.);
- Advocate for diversion and other alternative justice programs, to be a primary option for all Indigenous accused where appropriate;
- Attend as a priority First Appearance, Bail, and plea courts; as well as, provide consistent and ongoing attendance in Indigenous Peoples’ Court, to ensure that the clients receive unbiased treatment from the legal system;
- Act as a liaison between the client and court administrators to ensure relevant information is brought forward to the court; which includes access to interpreters if required or requested;
- Ensure the direct-service user understands the charge(s)/ matters before the court and that they understand their rights and responsibilities in relation to these matters;
- e.g. right to obtain a lawyer (private, legal aid, or duty counsel), self-representation opportunities, etc.;
- Explain to the clients and their families/supports (with consent) the nature and meaning of any conditions/ requirements taken against or applied to the clients and any other processes that arise because of contact with the mainstream justice system;
- Advocate on behalf of clients for the preparation of Gladue reports, and to utilize the principles of Regina vs. Gladue;
- Organize and/or conduct at least one public education/prevention workshop per year on matters relating to adult/youth justice issues;
- Ensure all service activities utilize culture throughout all junctures of planning and delivery;
- Utilize quarterly reporting tools and database systems to input all data as required.
**WORK ENVIRONMENT**
- Adaptive working environments - courthouse, cell block, Odawa NFC, 510 Drop in, Some community outreach;
- Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
- Work seven (7) hours per day with some overtime when required.
- Evening and weekend work when necessary.
**SALARY**
To be determined based on experience and education.
