As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics Ontario relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered quality sports training and competition experience. Athletes look to volunteers for inspiration, guidance and coaching. In return, volunteers have amazing experiences and often stay with the organization for years. Volunteering for SpecialOlympics can be a life-changing experience — not just for the athletes, but for volunteers as well. Special Olympics Ontario's programs promote participation and inclusion and transform the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. When volunteers come together with athletes with intellectual disabilities through Special Olympics, longstanding myths are dispelled, negative attitudes changed, and new opportunities to embrace and celebrate people with differences are created.

**Job purpose**:
To build and deliver the Volunteering Strategy for Special Olympics Ontario (SOO), including the management of individual and organizational relationships, working across the charity to ensure volunteers play a bigger role in all aspects of sport, competition, and community development on behalf of Special Olympics Ontario.

**Volunteer Development Officer core duties include**:
**Volunteer Development**
- Develop and deliver SOO’s Volunteering Strategy
- Effectively recruit, manage, develop and retain volunteers
- Ensure all SOO volunteers have appropriate induction, supervision, development and training, introducing and managing structures for these, as needed
- Design, introduce and embed new volunteer roles in SOO
- Build and manage relationships with potential volunteer providers throughout the community, including corporates and public funded organizations.
- Effectively promote and market all volunteering opportunities at SOO
- Manage and maintain SOO’s policies and procedures relating to Volunteering
- Manage and maintain SOO’s Volunteering digital hubs, web pages & social media
- Be a point of contact for all SOO’s volunteers, current and prospective
- Ensure effective recognition is in place for all volunteers
- Manage the communications plan for volunteers, working with the Field and Program Teams in growth development strategies

**Planning and Development**
- Identify learning and development needs of volunteer advisers and trainees.
- Develop and maintain effective administrative systems and records.
- Attend relevant internal and external meetings, including internal staff meetings and regional meetings.
- Contribute to the organization planning process by providing regular reports and feedback.
- Keep up to date with policies and procedures relevant to the role

**General**
- Keep up to date with research and campaigning issues & ensure it promotion and integration into learning, training, and development activities.
- Work co-operatively with colleagues and encourage good teamwork, clear communication and common practices.
- Abide by health and safety guidelines and share responsibility for own health and safety and that of colleagues.
- Create a positive working environment in which equality and diversity are well managed, dignity at work is upheld and team members can do their best.
- Identify your own learning and development needs and take steps to address these.
- Carry out any other tasks within the scope of the post.
- Be an active member of the Program and Fundraising & Marketing team, attending and contributing to regular team meetings etc.
- Attend events and meet supporters and volunteers as required; this will occasionally involve working out of hours and travel.
- Represent SOO within the communities across Ontario, including carrying out talks and presentations as required
- Operate within the law at all times, with reference to health and safety; safeguarding; equality and data protection legislation
- Work flexibly, from time to time to meet the needs of the job

**Job Requirements**:
Prior experience, and proficiency in:

- High degree of organization, attention to detail, professionalism and diplomacy;
- A proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, presentation skills, and conflict resolution abilities;
- Self-directed and enthusiastic team player that prioritizes building strong professional relationships;
- Ability to work in a flexible team environment and the ability to work independently, while managing multiple projects & tasks;
- Dependable, maintain a consistent workday schedule, work cooperatively with colleagues and management, communicate effectively and possess good customer service skills;
- Experience in a non-profit environment considered an asset;
- Experience successfully working alongside a team of diverse and determined individuals;
- Passion for social inclusion and equality;
- Must have a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license, a clear driving record, and access to an insured vehicle;
