**About Us**:
Located in the Policy and Planning (P&P) sector of the Strategic Services and Governance (SSG) division of Alberta Education, the Policy Development and Coordination branch (PDC) is a centre of policy excellence that provides decision makers with thoughtful, innovative, well-researched, and fully analyzed policy advice and options. PDC also supports decision makers and their strategic planning by tracking and coordinating policy initiatives across Alberta Education.

PDC is responsible for maintaining and enhancing Alberta Education’s policy capacity by providing support and expert advice to program areas as they develop policy proposals and move them through the government’s decision-making processes. PDC also creates policy capacity events in the department.

PDC supports SSG by leading cross-divisional work within Alberta Education, such as developing the annual Guide to Education, and supporting the department’s involvement in cross-ministry projects.

**Role**:
The Policy Analyst’s main accountability is to successfully support PDC’s responsibility in Alberta Education for policy development; capacity-building; and policy integration and coordination.

The scope of the Policy Analyst’s role is system-wide and involves supporting program areas to ensure that policy development, implementation and coordination in Alberta Education considers a diversity of perspectives including the Government of Alberta’s strategic priorities, Indigenous perspectives, and social and economic factors.

The Policy Analyst ensures that policy issues affecting the K-12 education system are identified and effectively conveyed when working with program teams across the department. The Policy Analyst provides information on policy development processes and ensures that strategic options to address policy issues are balanced and clearly identify implications for Alberta’s:

- K-12 education system
- Students, parents and families
- School authorities
- Educators, school and system leaders; and
- Other education stakeholders

In addition, the Policy Analyst provides policy support and advice to Alberta Education’s program areas to ensure policies are aligned with approved strategic direction and integrate effectively with the department’s other policies. The Policy Analyst will support senior policy leaders in Alberta Education by tracking and coordinating policy initiatives across the department. The Policy Analyst will enhance Alberta Education’s policy capacity and knowledge of the policy development and government approval processes by leading training and workshops for staff.

To be successful in this position, the Policy Analyst will need sophisticated written and verbal communication skills along with strong interpersonal and presentation skills. They will need to demonstrate advanced analytical, critical and lateral thinking skills, including synthesizing large amounts of information to identify emerging policy trends, issues and implications. The Policy Analyst will be expected to have a clear understanding of policymaking inside the Alberta strategic context, with specific attention to:

- Government priorities
- Approvals processes
- Legislative processes and cycles
- Fiscal processes and cycles
- Social and economic implications; and
- Policy issues and trends occurring in Alberta, Canada and around the world

**Qualifications**:
University graduation in a related field (such as Political Science, Public Policy, Public Administration or Education).

4 years progressively responsible related experience in:

- Public policy development and/or coordination
- Project management
- Initiative tracking and monitoring
- Preparing policy documents for decision makers

Equivalencies may be considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
