Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Research and Innovation (AVP-RI), the Strategic

Initiatives and Technology Transfer Officer is a key member of the service-oriented Office of

Research and Innovation (ORI) team, and possesses analytical, flexible and forward-thinking

qualities. The incumbent is responsible for two major portfolios within the ORI - strategic

initiatives in research and innovation, as well as technology transfer services. Additionally, they

oversee CUE’s Safeguarding Research Program, focused on research security through the

review and risk assessment of research, commercialization, and technology transfer

agreements.

As the Strategic Initiatives Officer for Research and Innovation, they work directly with the AVP
- RI and with CUE researchers to provides institution-wide, portfolio-focused research

development support in alignment with CUE’s Academic and Research Strategic Plans. The

incumbent draws on a broad understanding of best practices and requisites in research

proposal development, requirements related to external funding organizations, and all aspects

of the research development and administration continuum, with the overall goals of: 1)

expanding and improving CUE’s research framework to best support its researchers, scholars,

and artists; 2) increasing success of research proposals; and 3) increasing the amount of

external research funding that comes to CUE. The incumbent is also responsible for identifying

new opportunities, as well as streamlining or improving current policies and procedures related

to research and innovation and CUE. Moreover, they are responsible for the development and

implementation of CUE’s Safeguarding Research Program.

As the Technology Transfer Officer for CUE, the incumbent is responsible for supporting the

translation of new innovations arising from research at CUE. Through the development of

robust and inclusive technology transfer services program, the incumbent supports and

protects the intellectual property of researchers, staff, and students, as well as guide them

through the various stages of translation and commercialization. Furthermore, they connect

researchers with industry partners to bring ideas to market.

The incumbent endeavors to integrate and advance CUE’s commitments to Indigeneity, equity,

diversity, inclusivity, and to convey respect for those undertaking research, scholarly, or artistic

endeavours.

**Responsibilities**:
Strategic Initiatives Officer
- Support the AVP-RI, as they lead CUE’s broad research security strategy related to all

research and innovation portfolios (for example: Research Partnerships, Tri-Agency funding,

and Industry Partnerships).
- Responsible for the Development and implementation of CUE’s Safeguarding Research

Program, by identifying strategies that meet CUE’s security objectives relating to research,

innovation, international partnerships, and commercialization activities.
- Responsible for assessing and engaging with other post-secondary institutions and all levels

of government on the identification and mitigation of research security threats.
- Identify best practices and policy development regarding research security, including data

governance, partnership and geopolitical risks, cybersecurity, and other activities.
- Manage and lead projects in the Office of Research and Innovation, such as the

implementation of CUE’s research data management strategy, obtaining CCAC certification,

eligibility to administer external research funding that is not in CUE’s current portfolio,

development of multidisciplinary and institutional grant proposals, among others.
- Provide strategic advice, mentorship and hands-on assistance to CUE researchers with the

those prepared for funding requests from the Tri-Agencies (CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC).
