The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has one (1) full-time permanent position vacancy to work in the Community Relations Section within the Equity, Inclusion and Human Rights Branch as the Indigenous Relations Advisor to complement the work of the existing Indigenous Relations Advisor. Reporting to the Manager or designate of the Community Relations Section within the Equity, Inclusion, and Human Rights Branch. The Indigenous Relations Advisor will work in a team environment to assist in building and fostering relationships with Indigenous communities, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and stakeholders, while developing strategies from an Indigenous lens to implement organizational change on the path towards Reconciliation. The individual in this position is expected to lead the organization in the research, development, design, and implementation of best practices in Indigenous Relations, and Reconciliation. The role will also provide support and expertise throughout the organization on various internal and external projects and initiatives.
- Establish working relationships between local Indigenous community members and stakeholders, orders of government, and the EPS.
- Support the development and operationalization of strategies and initiatives, including developing internal practices to better coordinate initiatives and services to the Indigenous community.
- Support the design, planning and implementation of Edmonton Police Service initiatives to enable Indigenous engagement with the Indigenous community.
- Facilitating and participating in formal and informal meetings to learn of concerns from the community.
- Support the Edmonton Police Service in developing and implementing an Indigenous Framework
- Support and help coordinate the Nîsohkamâkewin Council for the implementation of systemic changes to policy, programs, and practices with the EPS.
- Consult with EPS staff and leadership to provide cultural/protocol insights and information about community needs and priorities. This includes providing organizational advice on Indigenous equity issues including cultural safety, anti-Indigenous racism, cultural awareness, best practices.
- Provide information to Indigenous communities on EPS programs and services.
- Support in facilitating Indigenous Historic Trauma training and other forms of training for the EPS.
- Navigate and support complex and politically sensitive project work with the support of the other members of the Equity, Inclusion and Human Rights Branch. Project work may be internally or externally focused.
- Prepare and deliver reports and presentations to executive audiences as required.
- Supporting the Oskayak Police Academy and other community engagement initiatives in partnership and collaboration with community stakeholders.

**Qualifications**:

- Lived experience and understanding of Indigenous, diverse, and marginalized communities is preferred.
- An understanding of historic & intergenerational trauma and the impacts of colonization on Indigenous people.
- University degree/ Diploma in Education or a Human Services field, e.g., Native Studies, Social Work, Recreation, Sociology, Psychology with related coursework.
- Applications can be submitted and may be considered without fully meeting the listed qualifications.
- Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience working with government and community organizations in roles that support community development processes, capacity building, collaborations, partnerships and organizational change is considered an asset.
- Ability to understand, connect and work with Indigenous communities within Edmonton.
- Understanding of topics and issues that are important to Indigenous communities, and an understanding of Indigenous Nation’s governance practices. This includes a demonstrated working knowledge of Indigenous historical and contemporary issues and knowledge of protocol and ceremony.
- Training in Anti-Racism Theory, Indigenous Awareness, and Trauma-Informed Practice. Knowledge and experience with GBA+ and similar methodologies is an asset.
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to truth and reconciliation, including an awareness of UNDRIP, TRC, and the MMIR (Missing Murdered Indigenous Relations) Calls for Justice.
- Demonstrated ability to write strategies, engagement plans, and to develop and present recommendations and reports.
- Well-developed problem solving and conflict resolution skills; ability to develop and present new ideas and conceptualize new approaches and solutions.
- Demonstrated organizational and project management skills with the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Excellent written/communication/presentation skills; experience in facilitating discussions and leading workshops is an asset.
- Knowledge of policing and experience working in a police organization is considered an asset.
