Edmonton, Canada Norquest College Full time

**COMPETITION NUMBER: 1040**

**FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES**

More than a program, Indigenous Studies strives to be a community centered in Indigenous culture, community, and relationships - to self, one another, the land and our more than human relatives. Authentic, meaningful, and purposeful Indigenous community centered land-based learning experiences are at the heart of our curriculum. Through the intentional interweaving of scholarly academic endeavors with Indigenous community service, engagement, and relational networks of support, we challenge contemporary notions of teacher, text, and classroom. Students, Faculty, Staff, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Cultural advisors together, strive to create a learning environment grounded in a culture of inclusion and belonging where we all can walk and learn alongside one another, with and from community and the land.

NorQuesters are difference makers and we’re searching for a casual Instructor to teach the following predeveloped course as part of our Indigenous Studies Diploma program, starting January 2025.

**INST 1000 Indigenous Studies I**

**Winter Term**:
Jan 6 - Apr 18, 2025

Thursdays 8:00am - 11:00am

This course introduces students to the Indigenous Peoples of Canada in both a historical and present-day context. Students will examine how the historic past of Indigenous Peoples brings us to present-day circumstances and the ongoing issues faced by Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and how this knowledge can help Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians to become good neighbors.

**HOW YOU'LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE**:
In an ever-changing world, now more than ever, it is essential to reclaim, restore, establish, build, maintain, preserve, and nurture ties to traditional ways of knowing, ways of being, ways of doing. It is through the revitalization and implementation of traditional land-based community centered principles and practices that the solutions to contemporary societal challenges can be found. It is up to the combined collaborative efforts of community leaders, families, Elders, cultural advisors, knowledge keepers, administrators, educators, and support staff to equip our students with the tools, experience, skills and knowledge required to tackle and overcome these challenges with confidence in themselves and their community. Education and the authentic interweaving and blending of traditional Indigenous ways of knowing with contemporary western education practices is the way forward. Courses in our program are designed with this in mind.

**WHAT YOU BRING**:

- Connection to and, understanding of Indigenous communities, cultures, and traditions.
- The ability to deliver predeveloped curriculum content in authentic and meaningful ways.
- Develop and deliver engaging, culturally relevant educational experiences to enhance learner understanding of Indigenous communities, and cultures.
- Experience in the interpretation, immersion, and assessment of curriculum.
- Master’s Degree or PhD, in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, or Education; or, in a related field with significant course and research experience in Indigenous Studies.
- 3+ years' teaching experience.

**WHAT MAKES YOU A DIFFERENCE MAKER**

***As a difference maker you bring**:

- Experience guiding the interweaving of Indigenous perspectives and pedagogy into the curriculum and course development process.
- Experience working with Indigenous community members and interweaving their voices and perspectives into curriculum and new programming.
- Experience using Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle and Blackboard, comfort with technology and software.
- Curriculum development experience is considered an asset.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong writing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to consistently meet timelines.
