Ojala Communications Professional-in-residence

**Term: 2 years**
The “Ojala Communications Professional-in-Residence” (OCP) is a key educator and resource for faculty, teaching assistants and students in the undergraduate programs within the Department of Systems Design Engineering. The OCP develops innovative new curriculum modules, leads in delivery of technical communication labs and co-curricular activities, and evaluates these activities. The educational modules are focused on oral and graphical communication and are delivered in capstone design, design, and other courses. An important goal is developing engineering students’ skills to effectively communicate with stakeholders in other professions and the public. The OCP holds drop-in office hours and also participates in evaluation of non-prose communication aspects of capstone projects. The OCP is a core member of select curriculum committees of the programs and partners with teams across campus for interdisciplinary endeavours. The OCP’s expertise is solidly grounded in knowledge translation of technical engineering concepts.
**Responsibilities**:
Development of technical communications lab modules:
- Research and evaluate best practice and existing methods for teaching oral and graphic communication to engineering students
- Incorporate activities to utilize content-rich technical information in classes that facilitate active practice of communication to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Create teaching module manuals and resources for future use by others
- Collaborate with academic counterparts of design courses to synchronize the presentation of material
- Enrich the student experience of the lab component through the development of multi-media instructional aids such as videos, demonstrations, web content, etc.
Deliver technical communications lab modules:
- Deliver communication skill labs in multiple courses per term including capstone design
- Evaluate student work and provide feedback in a timely manner
- Maintain student manuals, materials and instructions in online content management system
Conduct program evaluation:
- Use quantitative and qualitative methods to assess achievement of learning outcomes
- Communicate results of assessment to program directors and Chair
- Collect and submit graduate outcome attribute metrics for CEAB accreditation
Provide mentoring and technical support to faculty, teaching assistants and students:
- Participate as a communications consultant for students taking workshop and design courses distributed throughout the entire undergraduate program
- Participate as a supervisor/advisor for communication aspects, especially verbal, of student design projects as time permits
- Host drop-in office hours for student support
- Train teaching assistants on evaluating and assessing communication deliverables (graphic and oral) as needed and contribute to assessment of TA performance
- Support faculty in other courses who want to develop their own communication driven student assignments and rubrics
Other duties include, but are not limited to:
- Participates in special projects (e.g. curriculum development, faculty-wide initiatives, special reports, etc.) as assigned by the Lab Director, Program Director, or Department Chair
- The incumbent will serve on committees pertaining to undergraduate pedagogy
- The OCP may participate in outreach events
Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in any field is required. A degree in technical communication, media, or teaching with a focus on technical and professional communication in engineering would be an asset.
- Engineering and technical knowledge and skills can come from education or professional experience
- 4 years of experience as a communications professional
- Demonstrated experience with communication of content-rich technical material
- Experience collecting and analyzing evaluation data
- Must have experience working with software tools used in stakeholder and public meetings
- Must have fundamental knowledge and skills in communication of technical content
- Proven aptitude for teaching and a demonstrated interest in working with students in a professional manner to provide technical advice and instructional material
- Must have a strong sense of pedagogy and how it is applied to diverse and changing student group
- Solid knowledge of technical engineering concepts, preferably with an emphasis on systems approaches and design thinking
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team within a busy and dynamic environment
- Excellent and demonstrable oral and written communication skills, including strong technical documentation and presentation/facilitation skills
- Strong leadership, supervisory, and mentorship skills
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, research, organizational, and creative problem-solving skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and visual communications software programs
